Welcome one and all to the Guitar Wars. These battles feature songs nominated by you, the folks from the Realms. This isn’t about who the better guitarist is, or what band is better. This is about the instrument and the song. Great solos are something that make us sit up and take notice, but the guitar is more than that. There are great riffs like the one in Beat It, which was not done by Eddie Van Halen. You know, that awesome riff that permeates the song is also the part that EVH had nothing to do with.
There are ways that the guitarist wraps his playing around the melody and makes a perfect fit that’s so subtle and imperceptible that most times it gets missed. And of course, there are the solos, some with blinding speed and some played so eloquently and with so much feel that you can get lost in one sustained note after another.
You are hear! Hendrix, Clapton, Lifeson, Atkins, Page, Abasi, Santana, Morello and a host of others will be popping up. Come on in and check out the virtuosity of these and others. Find new songs you can add to your shuffle or just reminisce on songs you may not have heard in a while. Enjoy.
Listen to each song and pay attention to the guitar part and vote for the song whose guitar part you liked better. Maybe you’re a fan of the slide, or finger-picking or electric solo, but give each song a chance and then vote for the performance that you liked better. We’ll go round by round and match by match until we have a winner. That song will be crowned best overall guitar song to listen to on the Realms. All the songs will have the main guitarist or guitarists listed along with the band’s name and the name of the song. Critique it if you want, and judge it as you will, but keep in mind, this isn’t a battle of what band or artist is better. I for one may not be a fan of a certain band or solo artist, but that will not keep me from voting for a song of theirs if that song has one of the most gorgeous guitar solos ever heard.
Matchups will close on the fifth day after they are posted.

55. Eddie Van Halen (Panama) Vs Richard Thompson (1952 Vincent Black Lightning)
Much respect to both artists, because one is using a solo guitar to carry the whole song and the other might as well be (seriously, is Mike Anthony even *playing* on Panama?). But I have to go with Richard Thompson. The man's fingers are flying on that track, and I have to concede that I'm coming from a terribly biased place. See, I think that Eddie is kind of a jerk, given his behavior towards the previously mentioned Mr. Anthony, while I found Richard Thompson to be the very picture of a scholar and a gentleman. I know that we talked about starting a thread in the music forum to discuss something along the lines of artists who we find personally repugnant but musically gifted. I think I might go do that today.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.

I was working this show: In 2003, at the NAMM show, the relationship between Peavey and Eddie began to strain. Peavey constructed a glass enclosed stage for Eddie in which to play for VIP's at 2 p.m. Eddie arrived late, shocking fans there with his disheveled appearance, as he immediately went upstairs and initially refused to play. After an hour of negotiations, Eddie came down while fans, who had lined up for hours prior to the appearance, roared with approval. Eddie ended up spending his short time on stage, talking about Wolfgang guitar production and his promise to take a keen interest in quality control. Eddie left, having only played a few notes and small riffs, much to the dissatisfaction of the fans and Peavey.
What they don't tell you is that Eddie lit up a joint while sitting with CEO Hartley Peavey during those negotiations. Unclassy to the max and a total lack of respect.

Eddie has always been a tool, I think he's chapped because Diamond Dave was way more entertaining than him.
and what kind of idiot divorces Valerie Bertinelli?

I just hate Van Halen in general.

Panama's a fun song, but 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is the perfect example of less is more. No amps, no wah-wah pedal, no tricks, no flash, just pure feeling and good playing.
