SPLIT: Give this character a power action if it has no action tokens. Replace this character with one or more qualifying characters each from a different entry listed on this character’s character card. The qualifying replacement character(s) must have either qualifying name and total no more than this character’s point value (unless those characters previously used the Merge ability to be replaced by this character). Replacement character(s) begin a number of clicks from their starting line equal to the number of clicks from this character's starting line. This ability can't be countered.
MERGE: When this character is adjacent to other friendly characters that each represent one distinct qualifying character listed on a Duo character’s character card and all of them have no action tokens, give this character a free action to replace all of them with that Duo character, the same number of clicks from its starting line as this character. The combined point value of the qualifying characters must be equal to or greater than the point value of the Duo character (unless that Duo character previously used the Split ability to be replaced by these same characters). The Duo character can't use the Split ability this turn. This ability can't be countered.
A quick question regarded the bolded section.
Obviously i get the concept. Thor & Herc (300 points) split into Thor (125) and Hercules (131) legally becuase 131+125= 256. Those two can rejoin even though 256 is less than 300 because of the exception. You just can't start with the two and merge unless you have a 256 point Thor & Herc duo.
Here's the sticky part: What defines "same character" I know if you split Batman & Robin into Bats and a 40 point Robin you can't grab a different 17 point robin to glue back to bats unless he's at least 121 points. But how does this work with those characeters merging and splitting with other people
Example:
Scarlet Witch & Wonder Man duo (225 points) splits into Wonder Man (145) and Scarlet Witch 75.(145+75=220) Later Scarlet merges to Supernova Vision (108) to make the Vision & Scarlet Witch duo (180.) 75+108 = 183.
V & SC split into Vision (130) and the 50 point dial on Scarlet Witch. Can the 50 point Scarlet join to Wonder Man to bc Scarlet Witch & Wonder Man (50+145= 195 vs 225) bc those where the same characters it split into?
"Same character" would be "same set symbol, same figure number". I would rule it also means same point cost, but I don't know if the rules are that specific.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
“No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulder blades will seriously cramp his style.”
I would rule that since you started with Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man, you could. However, you don't have to split Vision and Scarlet witch into the 50 pt version, so to make it easier on everyone I'd say just use the 75 pt version.
At the same time, I understand how the different powers could be more useful in different situations.

This is confusing....I want to split and merge doom and kang. But I don't get it. Would it be more beneifiicial to start as the duo or to merge into later in the match?

Depends on what you're basing your team strategy around. There is no real answer to this question as your own play style will dictate what is "more beneficial" at any given time.

This depends on two things. Your play style, and the point cost restrictions. If your Doom figure and your Kang figure total more points than the Doom and Kang duo, you must start with them separate. If they total less than the duo, you must start with the duo. If they are equal to the duo, then you can start with either of them.
Once you have established that, it is really up to you how you want to use them. The only duos I have used split and merge with are the Flashes and Shazam! and Black Adam. In both instances I started separate, and built accordingly with point costs. The Flashes become a very strong, if expensive, support and finesse attacker at the end of their dial. Shazam! and Black Adam have 2 6 click dials. My goal for each was to use the individual figures until they took enough damage to be less useful than the late dial duos, and merge. If you do it right, you can merge onto the start of the Shazam! dial even if Black Adam and Shazam! solo figs have taken a hit or two.
