So, our next film, Classic or Crud, Hit or Miss, what say you ALL?
Our next film open for discussion, and ultimately an Overall RATING by you all, is:
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
Let the discussions flow. Likes, dislikes, classic film or overhyped trash, and DONT FORGET to place an Overall Rating when youre done.
Its easy, just give a Rating from 1 (Jaws 4:The Revenge) to 10 (Jaws), and thats it. Course I'd love to have you all give reasons as to why you feel it deserves this Overall Rating, and more than encourage discussions with us all about them.
ALSO: I urge Any and All of you who have yet to do so, to go back to our older catalogue of RtM films (Very easily done by the Links List right on the top of the Rate The Movies Forum), and vote for your favorite, not so favorite, and anything in between movies. We have HEAPS there already, some Classics, some Crud, let's hear what YOU think about them ALL!
So, what say you all?
Next Film: ??????
HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
In a nutshell, this is one of those few sequels that is actually as good (or better) as their predecessor.
Lots of actions and big big explosions... not a dull moment. A good ample supply of humor. Great acting, C. Pine and Z. Quinto are really becoming the Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock that we (the 80's children) were familiar with. And what's best is that the story was really good. Not only was they true to the original Kirk & Spock (W. Shatner/L. Nimoy) relationship but they had tried to fit into that universe as well. I mean, from the first one, it was made known that this ST was running on an alternate reality (that's why there are 2 Spocks - 1 young and 1 old) and having Khan serves to create a bond of those 2 realities.
And boy, it had been such a long time since I've seen Peter Weller in a movie that I actually didn't know who he was until the credits starts to roll. And he did well.
Overall, I rate this a 9 out of 10. And would mind watching it another 2 or 3 more times.
If I take it in with the whole of Trek for comparison then I'd give it a 7/10. It is a lot like Nemesis for me (and I'm admit this was better overall than Nemesis) it was fun but not really Trek.
If I compare it to what I like in Trek (DS9 and seasons 3-6 Next Gen) then it was a 4/10.
It felt a lot like Trek 5 meets a Fan Film.
It was like Trek 5 in that the universe was populated by stupid people who do stupid things. Parking the ship underwater to survey a planet as opposed to doing it from orbit where you can see everything... RIGHT off the coast of the tribe who aren't supposed to see you (as opposed to I don't know a bay or peninsula down coast. It's an extra minute as the Starship flies :P)... not just setting up the cold fusion bomb and transporting it into the volcano pre-rigged. Having the high security post-terrorist attack meeting in as open and undefended a location as possible. Letting Scotty's shuttle enter the top secret Warship construction yard completely unchallenged (or seemingly undetected)... Etc
It was like a Fan Film in how it kept making "homage" references to previous films or episodes that typically were more like outright thefts from those references. I DID like Scotty sabotaging the Dreadnaught like it was the Excelsior. However the whole swapping Kirk and Spock's death complete with lifted dialogue... I was fighting off tears of rage and laughter in the theatre at this one. They did this same "homage" in the "official" fan made seasons 4 and 5 of the TOS the Lost Voyages (or Phase 2). It was about as subtle and devoid of originality (though the Voyages one was more clever in that it was their explanation as to why an alternate universe Pike ended up in the wheel chair, as it was him who went into the reactor). I expect this sort of lifting from a fan film. Not a multi million dollar addition to the official cannon.
To prove my Trekkie credentials here is my custom Enterprise map I've been working on the past few months
Man, I made a thread in the main movies section about this before seeing this thread posted. I'll copy/past what I had to say.
I could go on for a bit about how it wasn't "my" Trek or about how it was missing the mark by taking some beats in the wrong directions or that it could have used some focus, but damn was that one fine film. I walked out of the theater after watching Iron Man 3 thinking it had been a fun film (if slightly disappointing) and talked with my friends about it for a few minutes and then moved on. I walked out of Into Darkness with my friends and we immediately wanted to watch it again, but I settled for going back to rewatch Wrath of Kahn later than evening.
I always thought they were using Kahn as the big baddie in the new film when I saw the trailer, but figured it might not be because Kahn wasn't a white english dude. I guess I was right and wrong because after a red herring or two in the film, we find out he is indeed Kahn.
I thought they did a decent job of making Kahn stand out and the fact that he had to team up with the Enterprise crew and mainly Kirk was a neat twist/shift. I really liked the direction they were going with Starfleet going militant and although I thought they could have done a 'classic' Trek move by making the film an allegory for people giving up power and freedom for safety and security, it instead became a generic action sci-fi film. However, I would say it it the very best generic action sci-fi film I've ever seen.
The story made sense, the characters all felt very natural and nothing in the movie really seemed forced. When my only real complaint is that they showed Kirk having slept with 2 women at the same time (seemed sleazy to me), I really don't have anything to really whine about at all. I have to say, I love how they kept putting in little bits where they would mention something from previous Trek lore, but it would be about how things are different because of the time travle junk from the 09 Trek film (Marcus finding Kahn instead of Kirk being the biggest and most important in the film). Ohhh, and how cool was it seeing 'Old Spock" again?! I was happily surprised.
The film seemed to respect the previous Trek mythos just as much as the 09 film, with call backs to TOS, the past films and especially Wrath of Kahn. I was bummed out the Kirk never really got to brawl too much with Kahn, but damn did I not laugh (out of surprise, not because it was funny) when Spock screamed out "KAHHHHN!!!". That fight Spock and Kahn had of the flying car was super dope too. I found it rather neat how they mirrored the ended two Wrath of Kahn to this film and switched Kirk and Spock's places, though I already knew Kahn's blood would cure Kirk before the door closed behind him and sealed his 'fate' (thanks for the two bits showing Kahn's magic cure-blood in at least two diffrent spots in the film that I can recall). A lot more nods to previous stuff, but I thought thats the Kahn scream and the ending death were the best bits.
All this being said, my favorite part of the film was the first bit on the alien planet with the volcano. How long was that scene? It flew right by, but I wanna say it was at least 10 minutes. That bit reminded me exactly of TOS, only with a modern day crazy budget. The action in those scenes was not about fighting because fighting is cool, but about exploration, preserving culture, and crazy future science stuff. And all that is what I really think of when I think of Trek.
I need to see it a time or two more before I put an actual ranking of where I place this in my order of Trek films from best to worst, but I have a feeling it'll end up number 3 or 4.
I'd give it a solid 9 out of 10 just based on how much I enjoyed it and the fact that I wanted to see it again so soon.
This was the first movie I've been able to see under my Clean Slate Policy... no spoilers, no reviews, no forums, no cast lists, no TRAILERS, nothing. All I knew was this was the second Star Trek movie, and it was likely to have the same cast. Also, I managed to see it at a Wednesday midnight 3D showing, so cut down on accidental friend spoilers there.
Holy testicles, this was awesome. I was actually surprised by this movie, because I didn't have any clue as to what was going on. The Cumberbatch reveal in the brig was an absolute shock, I really had no idea they'd even go there. The only complaint I had is a real nitpicky minor thing that I'm sure was a personal reaction and not much of a common one... I was surprised/pleased/annoyed/dismayed at the scene where Spock is the one who makes the now-infamous scream. However, shortly before this I feel like the Nimoy moment was well done and easily made up for it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the constant "easter egg" stuff did push me out of the movie at times, but not by much. Overall, having seen Iron Man 3 the week before, this was just done a lot better. I'd see it again and I'd buy it on blu-ray, something I couldn't say for the first Star Trek reboot movie. I actually plan on seeing this again.
And ffs, if you've mentioned Cumberbatch's character name in your review, please spoiler it. Knowing ahead of time really ruins this movie, moreso than most spoilers.
9.5/10 It's still not Avengers.

I saw it and liked it.
The spaceship battles were great.
I really enjoy Karl Urban's McCoy.
Minor quibbles:
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
Benedict Cumberbatch is a fine actor and did a good job, but he in no way looks like a Khan.
Scotty was still too comedic, not as bad as in the first one though,
The action was great, but I'd like to see what the same cast and crew could do with a slower, more cerebral story. Something involving an encounter with the unknown in deep space.
I was thinking about an 8 but I gave IM3 an 8 and I do believe I enjoyed this movie more...so I'll bump it up a half a point because of Eve to a 9 out of 10.

I am guessing that since they are in an alternate reality or a different time-line (whichever it is), they can alter that iconic figure's appearance and race. You know like Mahatma is common name for an Englishman. I know, it's kind'a of a Duh! scenario. Hehe.

See, this is kinda how I felt too. The first 10 or whatever minutes were my favorite because it felt like actual classic Trek and all the characters acted how they would have on the show with a plot about another planet.

See in theory I completely agree.
However the first 10 minutes in execution for this film were the worst parts of the whole movie. It was a complete exercise in incompetence and sheer stupidity. In the show when Kirk (or Picard) typically violated the Prime Directive it was for ethical or moral reasons. They sometimes had to clean up other people's messes, but GOOD prime directive stories should be about contaminating the other culture due to a human/emotional reason.
In this film it was boiling down to Kirk and Spock being the biggest morons in the fleet. "I can't come into contact with that tribe. Hmmmmm... I know I'll park in the ocean (rather than stay in space where I'd appear to just be a shooting star at worst). Where to park? Oh there's a good spot RIGHT beside the village! I could pick a spot just a few miles up or down the coast or out in the open ocean, but this spot has the perfect cliff to jump off of to escape should I need it. Oh and this way if I need the transporters they won't work as I won't have line of sight anywhere!"
If the ship had had to come out of orbit to help I would have been better with it. The Enterprise being in the ocean for a surveying mission was just complete stupidity. Also seriously what about that cold fusion bomb rig required it to be set IN the volcano, rather than on the transporter pad the beamed down from space? (Forgoing the complete lack of science with the situation... tectonic problems are not caused by heat, but rather pressure. All they did was create more solid particulate debris to be flung at the village when the volcano blew by freezing the top...)

Good points.
but there's no such thing as Line of Sight in Star Trek.
but there's no such thing as Line of Sight in Star Trek.
There was in this film. They said it, not me :P ... yet they also had a transporter that could go from Earth to the Klingon homeworld (the worst thing from the first film, really annoyed they brought it back as a key plot point).
I have made a more complete review elsewhere, so I will keep this brief.
I give it a 6/10.
Although it was a very fun film, it was too derivative and had too many rehashed elements. This should have been a new story with no basis in a re-make or a re-imagining of a Star Trek movie that did not need re-making in the first place. All in all, though, I will buy it for the collection.
Three highlights of the film:
- Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy (best one-liners in the script)
- Benedict Cumberbatch (a brilliant actor despite his role)
- Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) in underwear (woah mama!)
Thassall.
