Man, it has been a long strange journey from when I left off playing Heroclix to where I got back on this past Saturday...
It has been nearly 3 years since I last played in a tourney, 3 years since I last collected or bought Heroclix, 3 years since I have had anything to do with the game (aside from pulling out my dusty heroclix boxes and remembering the good times I had playing). They are the good ol' days now.
But now I'm BACK!!!
I will say that the game has changed in some major ways since I last played and the dynamics of the game + the stats of a lot of the new figures + the several iterations of the PAC and rules + plus these new mechanics such as the Infinity Gauntlet with the gems and the Bat Belt (which I only knew a little of from what I read here on HCRealms) + the 3 YEAR GAP have put in the back seat of a bus that is moving very rapidly. Most of my pieces (probably 97%) are way underpowered when compared to the new sets and pieces that are out there today... I am an old man in the Heroclix universe (heck, even Feats and BFC's are old school now).
I will say that certain sets/powers/changes to the PAC are exciting, but I am so far behind with sets that it will take me weeks, possibly months to get back into fighting form.
So I look to the Legendary HCRealmers for any and all advice at how to start building up my forces. I will say that HoT and Web of Spider-Man (the last two sets I collected from) are still competitive, but I need to start modernizing my forces so I can at least be competitive once more. Some of the gamers I met gladly traded with me, so I have some of the new characters but I've got a long way to go. Anyhoo, thanks in advance for any help you give, and...
It's Great to be Back!
Smaug: "My wingspan will blot out the sun!"
Thorin: "Then we will fight in the shade."
That was the one thing I heard about the most... the rapid changes in rules and the PAC. I think they're coming out with so much cheese, that they have to make changes all the time. Back in the day, there were certain characters that came out that were way OP'd, and they'd make changes months afterward... but then it would be a while before they made more changes. Not really unexpected.
And thanks...
Smaug: "My wingspan will blot out the sun!"
Thorin: "Then we will fight in the shade."
And don't worry about your collection being outdated. It happens so fast now, I have been continuously buying and my collection is outdated, too.
what he said.
and just to give you a point of reference: back during the WoS days, a 10 AV was considered pretty good on a fig. now we're seeing 11 AVs pop up way more frequently in recent sets (WXM a prime example).
Do you like DC comics from the 1980s? So do I. Check out: www.dcinthe80s.com.
If you wanna buy, and buy cheap, hulk and superman bricks are fairly cheap. Heck, even amazing spiderman bricks are cheap. All have good stuffs in them!
Welcome back, something about reading rules, blah blah blah, go KO something!
If anything, the rules changes have made those older figs more nasty now! I'm looking at you good old Ultron with the two bolt, EE, high attack 10 range and doom team! I always liked you better than your older Veteran brother anyway!
Always try to leave an internet argument at lvl 1!
You'll do good to learn tiny size (that is only like 12 months old, but is about 5 or 6 new mechanics ago!), split/merge, vehicles, team base rules, and of course the uber-prevalent resource dials.
Another change recently is multiple levels of elevations instead of just "elevated". But yeah, read the PAC and rule book, then read the PAC again. and again.
Relics are pretty self explanatory.
I actually like the relics, someone traded me an Infinity Gauntlet with the full compliment of gems for an old clix he really wanted, and I'm eager to try it out. I also received the Batman Utility Belt with the Batman cowl, so now my old DKR Batman becomes what he should have been to begin with... a Batman Team Member.
I see what your saying Jaded033, like I said I played Saturday of last week and the amount of cheese was so incredible, I almost wanted to open some windows in order to air the place out.
I do try to have fun and the venue I play it is really accepting and most of the players play for that self same reason. I'm actually interesting to see how this Fear Itself set plays out, the figures I've seen so far are AMAZING.
I don't feel so out of place with my collection after what you said YouWaShock, I guess I just have to be vigilant and collect what I can. It's nice to see that they have singles for sale, including some of the more recent sets I missed.
Smaug: "My wingspan will blot out the sun!"
Thorin: "Then we will fight in the shade."
If you understood the PAC - I mean really understood it because you read it, you'll be fine.
If your understanding of the PAC was simply, "Pulse-Wave ignores everything" and you can't use Running Shot with Ranged Combat Expert because that is the way it is / my judge told me - then the new changes will be more daunting.
One thing that hasn't changed is the people are the biggest deciders whether a game is fun or not.
There are a lot of dynamic figures and some really capture the essence of their characters. I hope you discover that.
Welcome back.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
