In the capture rules, it says that when a captured character is released, the character is "defeated". It doesn't say that the character is KO-ed.
However, in the glossary, it says that "defeated" means (among other things) that the character is KO-ed.
However, we have been taught to never use the glossary as a source of rules; the glossary is instead something that gives you the vague idea of what's happening instead of actual rules.
So, is a "released" victim of capture KO-ed? This matters for things like the following:
(1) I capture chase Magik. I release her. If she is KO-ed, her trait activates giving +1 to a combat value for other Phoenix Five characters (unless the fact that she is off the map prevents this from happening since she can't use her stuff while off the map?)
(2) A piloted vehicle is captured and released. When KO-ed, the vehicle's pilot ejects (unless he can't eject because there's no adjacent square for him to eject to since the vehicle didn't occupy a square?).
As for a captured vehicles pilot...... I assume he is ejected adjacent to where the vehicle would be (As vehicles become super heavy objects upon KO... in the opponents starting area.

I remember the two NOT meaning the same thing as a result of effects like Lazarus Pit, which allow a character to come back. Defeated means the character is gone and includes being KOed, but this could well have changed since I last paid attention to it.
