I know it's been rules before that you can't have a prime character on your "team" and in the sideline because your sideline is considered part of your force. However I was looking through the rule book and saw this:
Certain game effects will call for a character to be replaced with one or more other characters on the map. When assembling your force, you identify these replacement characters although they are not yet on your force. Replacement characters’ point values are not added to your build total. All players should agree on the maximum number of replacement characters allowed per force
I'm wondering what I am misunderstanding on this. From the quote above it seems like one would be able to have a prime in the sideline as well as on the team you are playing as long as they aren't both currently in play.
the reason I bring this up to to bring up a follow up question. I am going to be run running a game with the restriction of 50pts max on all pieces in your force. Now, I know the bottom line is if I'm the judge I can rule it how I want, but in general if a game calls for the type of restriction I listed would a duo character worth say 100 points be allowed? Assuming two of my 50 pt characters are used to merge into it?
Game elements that are added into the game after it begins are considered to be part of the force of the player whose effect caused the addition.
If you have 2 characters on the map that are both prime, they will both be part of your force and violate the rule of only one prime

PRIME CHARACTERS
Characters with a green ring on their base are Prime characters. When building a force, you may only include one Prime character on it.

Understood. What I guess I'm asking is what if I never bring the second prime into play? If it stays on my sideline is that legal (although altogether pointless)

This says you can only have one prime when you build your force. Is there something else that says you can't have two primes on your force later on?
And what if the first prime (say, Aloysha Kraven) is KO-ed and then you want Beast Boy to morph into his prime version? You'd only have one prime on the map at that point.

As to the bolded part I would say a KOEd piece is still part of your force. So you can't have a KOEd prime and a prime on the map. I'm still foggy on he sideline though

KOed figures are still part of your force.
It was ruled previously with the Utility Belt (I can provide link if you want), which also only stipulates during set up, that you can never have more than 3 of any one gadget attached at one moment. The precedent was that setup restrictions apply all game, or at any moment in which you change how things are "set up".
Quote
Setup: Utility Belt begins the game on the green line. After forces are revealed, attach up to one Utility Belt Costume if the
Costume slot is active and as many Utility Belt Items
there are active slots (no more than three of any specific Utility Belt Item). The Utility Belt has no KO click and may rotate past the starting line.
