Start off playing straight from the rule book. The sample builds at the beginning of the rulebook are pretty good when helping to figure out the flow of the game.
After you and your son try out each of the ships and thier suggested load-out, try one of the scenerios from the back of the rulebook (or from one of your expansions if you like; each expansion comes with a new mission but go for one of the missions with a lower build total to start).
After that point, you should be set and have a pretty good grasp of the game to play however/whatever you like.
Nice. The OP prize ships are pretty valuable, generally, depending on the ship (the Sutherland and the Klingon ship are generally more valuable than the Romulan, I think).
The participation stuff is fairly easy to get, but you could probably trade some of it, especially the colored bases.

On a related note, someone on BGG had suggested that WKs might be releasing colored bases for general release in the future, based on some conversations they had, I wouldn't bank on it but it's the first I've heard it mentioned.
Grain of salt and all that.
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
You could post them in the marketplace forum here, but it looks like there's not much going on. I'm not sure where else. Maybe check boardgamegeek and see if they have a trading forum.
Since AW isn't blind purchase, like Heroclix, trading is going to be a little trickier. I guess someone could buy a few of the regular ships you need and then send them to you in exchange for one of the OP prizes.
i got a full sutherland with full cards etc. is that enough to get hold of a month 1 trade or a set of basic ships?.
i have the starter set and 5 basic ships but missing the rest. i have month 2 to 4 but missing month 1.
what would be my best way to trade the sutherland to complete my basic set and month 1?
Put up a thread in our marketplace forums. If a buddy of mine wins or gets second on Saturday I know he will trade his month one ship for a Sutherland.
cheers guys i will get it all sorted and get a trade on as would be interested in getting all the basic ships sorted first. Easy to pick up as a set on the auction site as a set, but if you have half of them. I guess a trade is best to complete.
my sutherland comes with a sealed with all cards and I have all the extra cards and bits. I also have a cards of other cards and boards too. Will try to get a list here to find out all the names.
