Okay, I've been mulling some ideas around (you might have seen my other posts), but I keep waffling on what to do...
Given that many of the folks here have been through OP 1 already, I figured that I should just throw it out there and see what you all think might be the best build (strategy) for OP 1 given the following restrictions:
80 points, NO MORE than 2 ships, pure faction, no AO, no resources (and I don't have any LE's.
I've only played one OP before, I jumped in on OP6 a week ago, not the best outcome, 1:1 and a bye, so this will effectively be my first 'meaningful' OP.
If you're going federation with that format you probably need the enterprise D, you're gonna face too many cloaked ships for the torpedoes to be super useful, also riker's ability is pretty silly for 4 points.
I like transwarp drive + engage + antimatter mines + rolling crits on top of cloaked klingons and romulans. The excelsior is worth buying 2 of just for the transwarp drive and feint imo, great little ship too. I really don't like the version of riker we have, I hope the Enterprise E will have a different/better version. I like running the miranda or defiant class ships with ransom + data for 2 evade tokens and 2 extra dice on defense if I'm running either of those ships, they're not gonna live through a 47000 dice klingon n'hcasschasra or whatever it is that deals massive number attack dice, but it does increase the odds. Plus if you're gonna cloak, why not get extra green dice to boot.
Honestly, I'm still not sure how to even take on a cloaked Klingon fleet, they seem daunting to me...
I figured I'd take one ship with torps and one with cloak as I don't know exactly what I'll be facing, hopefully not hoards of Klingons.
I decided on the Excelsior over the Enterprise D because it is more maneuverable, especially given the apparent limited space in the playing area of OP 1. With Chekov, it becomes even more maneuverable while still being a pretty beefy ship.
I figured I'd use the Defiant to zoom right into close range of a cloaked ship and hopefully provoke the opponent to attack me, giving two free atk dice with no defense, and then try to stick to them like glue for a couple turns to see if I can provoke it again?
Probably not the best plan...but the problem I see with Feds (with my limited experience) is that much of their upgrades/crew are defensive, and they have little primary weapon power, so I'm not sure how to counter cloaked (Klingon atk dice heavy) players when playing Feds?
Because of this, I'm strongly considering Roms or Doms, or succumbing to the Klingon bandwagon.
The last 5 points were tough. I would have put a Pilot on board the Valdore, but that's an LE card. I went with Double Back to give the Valdore an extra surprise move, but I could see putting Plasma Torps on the Khazara instead, to boost its offensive potential. Khazara is mostly there to tank.
This is assuming you're not going to try and take the station. If you want to go for DS9, I'd maybe consider Dominion.
