Does the check on line of fire happen just once, or can it happen continuously throughout the action?

For example - my star Sapphire character has a 4 range, and is surrounded by clear, open terrain. There is an opponent 4 away, one 5 away, and one 6 away. I can usually target the one 4 away, but thanks to the emotional spectrum, i can now target the piece 5 away. Is it done there, or can i now say that 2 pieces are in my line of fire, so i can target the one 6 away?

Tomorrow is my first chance to play that lantern, so i want to get it right.

Range and Line of Fire are two different things. You can have LoF to something that is not within your range. In your example, your character has LoF to 3 opposing characters, so when you give them an action, they will have +3 to their range.
