While we are getting the umpteenth version of Superman and Batman, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut. In this edition of Unclixed, it's the Cro-Magnon Teen Titan known as Gnarrk!
Gnarrk first appeared in 1971's Teen Titans #32 as a Neanderthal that ended up in the present after a time travel adventure Kid Flash and Mal Duncan went awry. So the team's financial backer, Mr. Jupiter, tasks the Titans with helping to acclimate him to present day.
So just imagine "Encino Man", just with superheroes instead of Sean Astin and Pauly Shore.
They shave him, dress him, cut his hair and give him the name "Gnarrk" because that's all he says. Lilith makes the most headway being able to communicate with Gnarrk through her telepathic powers. They then start dating. It's the 70's.
Gnarrk's origin then got a re-do in the Post Crisis DC. There, he was a Cro-Magnon that Lilith and the Titans discovered encased in ice. Lilith was managing to hear his thoughts because Gnarrk was found with an energy stone from another world stuck in his chest. Gnarrk was awakened, went berserk and then got shot repeatedly by STAR Labs security guards. He was then on life support for a year before he finally passed.
Now when you think about that for a moment, it's really a horrendous story.
Gnarrk got more of a chance to have an impact when he appeared in the New 52 Titans Hunt miniseries by Dan Abnett. In that series it's revealed that the original Teen Titans existed prior to the other version (Tim Drake, Kon-El, Cassie Sandsmark, etc.) and everyone's memories of them had been erased. And in that lineup of the Teen Titans, Gnarrk was one of the original members. The comic doesn't go into Gnarrk's backstory, just that he's an strong expert hunter who's living in modern day.
The 70's, people.
Why clix him? Same reason as every other Titans related character I've spotlighted in this series: There's more Titans than just the original four, the New Teen Titans and the current roster. There's a big chunk of history that's being overlooked and with a movie in theaters now and a new live action series on the way, it might be a good time to show off the whole legacy of the team. He was also in the original cartoon.
Who would he play with? Titans. Maybe 'past' generic themes also.
What would his dial look like? If we're going off of Gnaark's New 52 iteration, he's probably going to be a standard brick of Charge/Super Strength/Toughness. Though he did use a spear. So whether one wants to give him some short range, Blades/Claws/Fangs or Exploit Weakness is up for interpretation.
What would your idea of a dial for Gnarrk look like, folks? Feel free to reply as that's it for this edition of Unclixed! Be here next week for an all new Comic Accurate! And in two weeks, we spotlight a DC villain!
A Close-combat, hunter dial (maybe stealth-busting? would that work with 0 range?) for him and a mind-control piece for her(maybe friendly MC?).
Of course they'd have to work together/give each other bonuses
I don't believe I've ever even heard of this character. But then I have rather limited exposure to the Silver Age Titans. I would love to see him get clixxed.
I feel like I have seen this character's name on a list, but never read a comic with him, at least that I recall.
I'd love to get another Teen Titans set that not only included our favorite Wolfman/Perez group and modern members, but a deeper dive into the pre-80s Titans.
Count me in on Gnarrk.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
Check out Gnarrk and everything through to the mid-70s or so..
The Teen Titans were really different before the Wolfman/Perez version came out in the early 1980's - early on, they were teenagers, not very powerful, certainly nobody on the team with cybernetics or starbolts.. so a villain like Dr. Light was actually a challenge. They often had to figure their way out of deathtraps. The series also got interesting in the mid-1970s with the introduction of Titans West, which brought Gar Logan into the team for the first time, along with Hawk/Dove, Bumblebee, and Golden Eagle. It's good for it's time, but reading these issues you can tell a lot of things have changed in society overall.
