So... since Ranged Combat Expert is not a dedicated action anymore, I think the most reasonable ruling would be to say he can keep making attacks as long as he keeps hitting with rolls < 6. As worded, it's asking you to do an action that doesn't exist, so making a basic ranged attack is the closest approximation.
