Anyone else dissapointed by Crisis on Infitie earths?
I recently picked up the TPB of Crisis On Infitite earths. I was very excited because i heard many good things but...
The beginning was too slow, parts of it seemed pointless and it did not stay changed. The little note at the end of the TPB talks about how they changed the universe forever (which they did) but also got rid of some people forever. I still see super girl comics and green arrow comics. What is everyone elses take, Pro's Cons's, if people pick out some things that i must of missed I will go back and read it, but i just need to hear some other opinions.
Well, ex0dus, it really helps if you had a working knowledge of the pre-crisis continuity and if you could also place Crisis in it's era..the mid 80s.
I don't know if I could tell you what you missed not knowing how long you have been reading comics. Some things have stayed the same in DC after Crisis and some things have crept back in slightly changed. SUpergirl is still dead...at least the Supergirl from Crisis. Bary Allen is still dead. Clark Kent was never Superboy in the Earth Prime (current) reality.

I also noticed your typo...all of them..

Yeah, but Barry Allen (The Flash) is still dead, and that Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) never existed.
Taken in the context of its time, Crisis on Infinite Earths was pretty darn good. The 'great big company-wide crossover' was in its infancy, and DC relaunched 2 of their flagship heroes with new origins and #1s. Batman just got a new origin (in Batman: Year One).
i LOVED the crisis. amazing artwork, great story, all in all really really good. it really freaked up the leigon, but other than that it's the best at what it did.
"I'm Mercury, dammit!"- Jay Garrick, regarding his hat.
I agree that looking at Crisis now in 2003, out of context, it is very confusing and a reader could say "Big deal, it's just another story where the universe is threatened and a bunch of heroes show up."
But you must take it in context. Crisis was HUGE at the time. It was (one of the) first maxi-series. Before it (and Secret Wars) there weren't big 12 part stories. Crisis also had been hinted at for almost a year before in almost all of the DC books. The Harbringer showed up and struck deals with villians and heroes alike. We never saw what the Monitor looked like, he was always in shadows. We knew he was there, we knew he was up to something, we had no idea whether he was good or evil.
It was the first time the universe was threatened on a scale that felt grand. It was pretty cool and scary to not know which DC characters were on the chopping block.
Also, Crisis made an appearance in EVERY DC title. Whether it was a big part of the story (like in Firestorm or Teen Titans) or just a footnote (like in Batman) it was still there. Even if you weren't following the main mini-series, you felt it's presence. Track down those back issues (look for the little "Crisis" logo at the top) you'll be amazed at how many there were (I even had all of 'em at one time! Dag, that got expensive!!)
Then you had the fun of all those DC characters (and the introduction of the Charleston characters). About a half a year before Crisis started, those awesome Who's Who comics started to come out. It was alot of fun to see a character in the background of the story that you had just read about in the guide. Do you think it is a co-incidence that Anthro is one of the first characters we see?
Then you have the deaths. Never before had so many big name lives been lost and forever. Sure, they've shown up again but never in the same form as they were Pre-Crisis and never for very long: Barry Allen Flash, Kara Zor-El Supergirl, Earth Two Superman, Superboy, E2 Robin, E2 Huntress, Dove, Clayface II, E2 Lex Luthor, E2 Wonder Woman, E2 Green Arrow, E2 Fury, Kole, Nocturna... many were all pretty significant or well-known characters, some with their own titles at the time. To see heroes die was not as common place back in 1985. (In fact, the only ones I can think of before this were Phoenix, Terra and Mr. Terrific.) It was shocking to see them dropping like flies one issue after another.
Finally, you had art and story by the (up to that point) best team at DC; Wolfman and Perez.
Put all that together and you might get an idea of how cool and exciting Crisis was for all of us fanboys back then!!
