Can last will's effect be resolved at any time during the turn? Or must it be resolved as soon as a monster is sent to the graveyard...
More specifically:
If I activate Last Will, then activate Monster Gate (Offering a monster as tribute as the cost to activate monster gate) will Last Will's effect resolve after Monster gates?
You must activate Last Will before the monster is destroyed, you cannot activate it after (Well you can but you wont get the effect)
Yes I know that. But when you activate Last Will there is a "mist" that hovers over your monsters, lol. When a monster is sent to the graveyard you may resolve this mist and fulfill Last Will's effect.
Once you activate Last Will, its effect is open. Once a monster is sent to the graveyard it is resolved. If there is not monster sent to the graveyard, Last Will is just sent to the graveyard. So in when it all comes down, Last Will must be activated before the monster is detroyed. Did it help?

No, my question is...
May I resolve last will's effect (meaning that the card has already been activated) after monster gate has resolved, or is there a timing issue against it??
When you activate Last Will, before a monster is sent to the graveyard, you special summon a monster with Last Will as soon as a monster is sent to the graveyard, you can't wait to special summon it like..during your End Phase.
You activate Last Turn
Monster gets sent to the graveyard from your field
Special Summon a mon with 1500 or less ATK from deck IMMEDIATELY after.
When you activate Last Will, before a monster is sent to the graveyard, you special summon a monster with Last Will as soon as a monster is sent to the graveyard, you can't wait to special summon it like..during your End Phase.

So in the case with monster gate, last will's effect will resolve after the activation of monster gate, but before the resolution of monster gate?

In this case, no, because you're still in the middle of another effect, you'll have to wait for the full resolution of Monster Gate, then special summon. I just mean, in general terms like, if you play Last Will, then you tribute for Cannon Soldier to do 500 LP, the monster is special summoned immediately after 500 LP. The person can't choose to wait until like...the Battle Phase when the opponent's LP is wide open to then special summon a mon like..Don Zaloog or something and be able to attack with it.
If your resolving Monster gate and Last Will. If Last Will would resolve after Monster Gate you will NOT get Last Will's effect, if Last Will resolves BEFORE Monster Gate you WILL get the effect
The original question:

As I've read this thread, the question seems to have become more complex and confusing. My suggestion is that Mr. desolutionist state what he's trying to do and ask if it's legal or not.
I'm new to the game, and may be out in left field, I'm definately confused, but I'm wondering if this is what desolutionist is trying to accomplish.
Activates Last Will
If a monster of yours is sent from the field to the Graveyard during the turn you played this card, you can select a monser with an ATK of 1500 or less fom your deck and play it as a Special Summon.
Monster Gate
Offer 1 monster on your side of the field as a Tribute. Pick up cards from your Deck until you pick up a monster that can be Normal Summoned, and Special Summon it.
He sends Monster A from the field to the Graveyard.
Resolves Monster Gate's effect special summoning a monster.
Resolves Last Will's effect (having already sent Monster A to the Graveyard) thus getting a second special summon off of sending only a single monster to the graveyard.
It seems this would be legal and would be a very nice move. Am I lost?
think of it this way: the Last Will has to be written BEFORE your monster dies so it can be carried out, right? That monster can't really write his Will if he's dead, now can he. But if he writes it BEFOREHAND, then you can pick it up, bring it to your Lawyer, and cash in on it.
Just to try and bring some normal sense to a sometimes confusing subject. I hope that makes sense, but it might not.

i just liked the term 'mist' in this explanation, so i'll expound on this answer...
since the discussion is all over the place, let me try to make it simple.
first, you MUST play Last Will prior to the monster being sent to the Graveyard from the field.
now, regarding Timing. Last Will falls outside of the the Timing criteria, and is referred to as a Mandatory Effect, similar to Witch, Sangan, Emissary of the Afterlife, etc., but the player may opt NOT to use the effect. meaning, the monster can be sent from YOUR side of the Field to YOUR Graveyard anytime during the current chain, and that "sending to the Graveyard" triggers Last Will. then, when the current Chain has completely resolved, Last Will asks if you want to use its 'lingering' 'mist' effect at that time.
if you respond with 'yes', Last Will resolves and places its effect in Chain Link 1.
if you respond with 'no', then the 'lingering' effects continues to 'linger' until another monster is sent from the Field to the Graveyard, or the current turn ends.
if you play/activate a card, summon, or perform any other action, you have effectively answered 'no' to Last Will.
so in following the above guide, you would play Last Will, allow the card to resolve and put its 'lingering' effect into play. then, you would play Monster Gate, tribute a Monster, then resolve the effect. afterwhich, you could activate Last Will's 'lingering' effect.
did that answer the question??
again, Last Will is an interesting optional mandatory effect. meaning, that it can trigger upon a Monster being sent to the field at anytime during the current chain, but afterwards, the player does NOT need to resolve the effect, and could save it for later in the current turn.
there are situations where you would like to save this effect and not resolve it at the first opportunity...
