My friend asked me this question and I wasn't realy sure, but if you set a monster do you have to set it in defence mode, and also if you flip summon a difence pasition monster dose it have to be fliped face up in attack mode, cuz the video games are like that and I usually go by the games.
The video games answer all your questions :) monsters must be set in defence mode, and have to be flip summoned in attack mode (but not when flipped up in damage calculation or by effect).
NEVER x1000000000 use the video games are references no matter how "up-to-date" they may be. Video games always contain glitches or program errors that may cause certain cards to work wrong and not follow the rulings exactly. Not to mention, by the time any video game gets here, it's already out of date...(remember, it comes out in Japan first and then takes at least a month or more to reach the US and, by then, there are usually corrections or other rulings made).
Anyways...
A.) Yes, it MUST be Set in face-down Defense Position. That's what a "Set" is.
B.) Yes, if you Flip Summon a monster, it MUST be flipped from face-down Defense Position into face-up Attack Position.

Okay, okay... I admit they do contain glitches, but on basic rulings there's no problems (such as summoning monsters).
No, even on some basic things there are possibilities of problems which is why, no matter how basic or advanced, video games are not good references to look to.
Many people continue to ask if Equip Cards can be equipped to face-down monsters. I believe this is NOT a random question, and is driven by the fact that in several Video Games, a monster either retains a Equip Card after he has been flipped face-down, or somehow or another, the Equip Card is attached to a face-down Monster, and as this is a basic situation where the Game Mechanics will normally prevent this from happening in real life, a video game with a poor programing line of instruction will allow it to happen.
They may not say that is what the cause of their question is, as many people respond with the canned answer, "Do not use video games....", so they just leave it as a question about the real game.
Yep..I've had Premature Burial stay face-up on my field meaninglessly when it was negated or the monster was flipped face-down or something on several occasions...I've had, in WC2004, Spirit Reaper be able to be revived with Call of the Haunted and NOT be destroyed and such.
At least the games don't still go by, if your monster is dark, a light one will kill it instantly. I could only imagine teh kiddiez!11 going by them rules.
