Me and my mates have been experimenting with this style of dueling and we have come up with a pretty good set of rules to govern it:
No One can attack until every player has had their first turn (In 3 Way that means the 4th turn is the first that you can attack in or in 4 Way its the 5th turn)
Cards such as Mirror Force only affect the person that attacked you
You can attack any of the other players
Cant use cards to defend another player (like in the Anime when Yugi defended Joey during Battle City with Regulation of Tribe)
The rest of the rules are basically the same
Oh, to decide who goes first, we play role of the dice highest number goes, then just play clockwise. If 2 roles are the same then Rock Paper Sissors to decide!
Anyone else ever play like this? If you guys do, what rules do u play by?
Three way duels have always seemed troublesome to me. Mainly because to stop it from getting unfair you'd need a rule like " you can't attack the player that went before you". The reason for this is, if you attack the person who went before you and destroy his monster, then he has to face several rounds of direct attacks before his turn even comes again. Therefore, unless there was some kind of reason to not attack that person(like in the Battle City Tournament) then whoever gets attacked first would probably lose almost automatically.
Also how do you guys decide the winner? The person who took out the most opposing players, or the last one left alive? Maybe even the one who did the most damage/destroyed the most monsters.
I find Two-on-Two have much less potential problems. However if you guys are having good luck with it, then power to you!
Me and my friends play 3way and 4way duels, and the rules are almost are like what you had but there are a little differences for instance.
1. Mirror force effects both players monsters and not just the attacking opponent.
2. You can deffened your partner agianist the other opponent.
3. Raigeki can effect both opponents just like mirror force can.
Other then that the rest remains the same.
The only thing wrong with this is that Mirror Force and Raigeki reference an opponent as one person and not multiple. Thus, they should only work against one opponent in any game that involves multiple opposing opponents. Also, using your monsters to "block" attacks that are directed towards your partner doesn't even have solid game mechanics to base off. The only cards you could use would be Spell/Trap cards in that case.
But then again, slifer666 is talking about "free for all" games with multiple players. So that still means things like Raigeki and Mirror Force would only affect one player because of their singlar wording in having reference to just one person and not multiple persons.
You have to remember that in order to have fair rules you have to establish consistant and logical game mechanics. We have all the game mechanics we need for games to contain multiple players.
Yeah the game style is free for all, it seems to work well as we always stick with the same rules and mechanics
As for how to decide a winner, generally we play "Last Man Standing" so if 1 play is knocked out then the other 2 carry on until only 1 player has Lifepoints!!
I've actually hit 16 player fre for all. They are awesome! You can play it as you would one on one only many more targets to get. You can even eliminate the 5monster card and 5 cards magic/trap card zones and beleive it or not, nothing actually changes, exept for one thing. People can deck out alot faster. Especially when 3-6 cyberjars or morphing jars go off before you even start. But i would advise anyone to try it cause it is nuts.
We play where that the 3rd and 4th player can attack and you can defend any one that you want to in the duel. we also have it to where anyone that activates a card like swords of revealing light can't be attacked until the 3rd or 4th turn.
iv played 4 way before but this is how we do it.
1 mirror force and all that only target 1 person enless it says entire field like heavy storm.
2 after everyone goes 1 turn to get something on the field we all role a dice and whoever roles the highest gets to pick who they want to attack . 2nd highest picks next but cannot pick the same person as the person before . the 3rd person picks next but has to attack the 4th person if the 4th person hasnt been picked yet because the 4th person cannon attack themlesves. you re roll after each person has there turn and do it again. when you finish someone off you get a extra 1000 life points also so it makes it more interesting.
I sort of agree with Yami Chasi, three man duels are rather difficult, so if you insist on a free-for-all duel, at least four or more people should be involved. I've played a three person duel before and I hated it because there are points in a duel where two of the three will team up just to take you out. And I was usually the one going against the two. It's no fun when people do stuff like that; it's a free-for-all, not a two vs. one! That's why I think if you're going to duel in that manner, you should have four or more people like I said earlier.
i play 3 player and 4 player and 2 on 2 and they all work out fine except with cards like 'wave motion cannon' my bro thinks he can do damage to all players in a dual like that but tha would be unbalanced wouldnt it?
as for anything else its fine we usually dice roll to go first than clockwise and u can only attack who has already gone people can gang up on people i think all the more fun and u can save people only with magic and traps eg magic jammer
