Agility is broken waaah.
Agility isn't broken waah.
Armor pierce is broken etc
Armor pierce isn't broken... etc.
Wash, rinse repeat.
This game has turned into a whine fest as of late. Nothing more nothing less. With people taking up the most amazingly self centered stances on the stupidest ideals, to serve their own egos... in turn, making each thread they touch into nothing but flames. Especially when people are trying to have half decent conversations about ratifications.
I wrote a post about this last year, and its been buried... and unfortunately so.
So let me run something down for you.
1. Play by play reiterations of someones post.
They're stupid. They're condesending, and they do nothing but start flames. Its a direct attack on someones character, and an extreamly detrimental action to take in a thread which is more a gathering of people trying to keep the game alive and growing.
2. I was a playtester.
Nobody cares. Unless your name happens to be followed up by the Wizkids insignia... nobody here cares. I playtested Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne, the Diablo II 1.10 patch and a whole bunch of other videogames.... does that make me good at them? No. Does it make my thoughts more valid then the next guys? No.
3. I play with some of the toughest opponents.
You, and everyone else on the boards.
Etc.
I'm sure that if i were to leave that open ended, people could go on for days about how much of a pain it is to watch a thread degenerate into that.
So... let me give you some advice.
If ranking means so little, and serves nothing as a joke, then why bother worrying about whats played? So the guy plays 15 pieces of arty, and an infy shield. So what. You lost! Dosen't mean a thing! Or is it the prize? Does it matter to you that badly that you have 39874983749873498734 Wahab Fusili's kickin around? Or how about that you've turned off a new player because you handed him his arse on a platter with your army you bought off ebay.
Its a game people. A game. Not a representation of your life. The reason why nobody plays some pieces, is this massive fixation on winning. This overwhelming need to make sure that your opponent is having the least amount of fun playing you as possible. To make sure that the first nail you hammer, is directly into a coffin.
For example.
I have 3 SS Arrow IV's. Pulled them out of boxes.
I have in total around 18 pieces of elite Artillery. SH Towed, SS Towed AA, Arrow IV's... all of this nasty junk. I own an Arnis, I own a Jacyn Bell. I owned a Sadia Wolf back when 16" was king. I owned 3 BR Legos when they had massive cheater infiltrate.
Do i play them? Save for the CA stuff, no. I don't play them in a huge amount. I've promised the other players that i'll never field lame armies. I play faction pure/merc armies. I have never played massive Artillery. I have played tankdrop only once or twice. I played Arnis as a harasser, and not as a chargemonkey.
I have my fair share of LE's. The majority championship prizes. Few fellowship prizes. Why few fellowship? Because i've requested that all BM's in my area disregard me for those LE's. Yes that includes the ones for the upcoming Marquee. Tho i want them bad, i'd rather have new players, or others have them.
Why would i do something like that?
Well. I'm one of the first people to show up. I have the game room ready to play. I've offered to buy pizza for the group cause i'm employed full time, and i know not everyone has cash for snacks. I have spare everything in case people show up. I have spare armies for new players so they're not limited to the garbage they get because the local cherry pickers have swiped all the good stuff. I'll take the time to teach someone how to play, and make sure he comes out next week, then beat him into the ground. I'd rather take the loss to gain a player.
Am i the patron saint of MW? Hardly. Every once in a while i get the urge to smash the living hell out of the locally unwanted players at our venues. I get the urge to go after the new prizes, and such. The next one being the Merc Longbow. I want one bad, and i will probably play Hate Armies for it. I am by no means, a perfect nice guy.
The thing is tho... how many times have you sat down with your friends, and just played a game. You, and a few friends. Mebbe you've played teams. Mebbe you've played free for all. But for me those are the most fun. The biggest thing being the people i play with. We'll intentionally not play stuff we know to be overly powerful.
For example...
Friday, no prizes, nothing, a bunch of us got together and played. Just for laughs kinda thing. Ended up playing a Mjol swarm. Nobody played artillery, nobody played tankdrop, nobody played anything of the sort. There were no rules saying what you could and couldn't bring.
Thats the kind of game i miss. The one where people don't care if they win or lose. The kind where theres really nothing on the line anymore. The kind where you just play.
So.
I encourage discussion about fixes to problems. I discourage being a pompous arse. If you have an idea, share it, and then be done with it, unless someone decides to bring up your point somewhere.
Yes there are problems with the current game. My biggest problem with the game, is that it all stems from prize support. People use the broken units because it provides the biggest chance at a prize. It brings out the worst in people. Mebbe we can discuss that instead of how broken some of the stronger special equipment is.
The problems unfortunately start when people have differing opinions on what constitutes fun, cheese, problems, whining, etc.
My friends and I play these "fun" games you describe, and when we do, we have no problems whatsoever with the rules. Because all the abuses that see play normally don't with us.
We take issue with them when so-called "competitive" players show up with über-armies constructed around these exploits and invade the venue, playing their games without smiling, laughing or whatever, take the prize and leave without a word. Even worse are the ones who mock and gloat, or say "You suck!" when you make a move they disapprove of.
If we dare to roll our eyes or comment to each other, they cry foul. They call us whiners. And they do stomp all over the young players we're trying to get into the game.
Where's the fun in that?
So if the constant threads about problems bother anyone, blame those guys.
1) Whining about whining is still whining. Welcome to the club.
2) If you haven't seen this level of "whining" before you haven't visited any net board about any game, movie, tv show, etc because they're pretty much all the same. It's easier to discuss the 1% of stuff you don't like than the 80% of stuff you do. How much is there to say about that? "Mechs are cool." "Yeah, cool." Boring...

"Artillery is broken." "Yeah, broken." Your right, that's much more fun.
Nothing will happen without this dreaded whining. People express themselves, sometimes vehemently about this game because they ultimately enjoy it. Maybe they like winning prizes. Maybe they like the sense of achievement that comes from practice.
Maybe this game is simply an escape from whatever they have going on in their lives, and they want to play a character of sorts. Maybe they even enjoy winning at any cost. More power to them.
I don't claim to have some form of omniscient clarity, but whining about percieved flaws in this game will only help improve it.
Maybe if the venue system would collapse and die, the prizehunters would leave this game in search of other realms to pollute. Which would mean that you could only play this game for fun with other people who play this game for fun. Doesn't sound too bad. It would also mean that there is much less reason for complaints.
It's sad really. This use to be a really productive board, but it seems that all the complaining has drummed that all out. Through, all the nonsense, you can still find creative ideas among the sea of garbage.
So what I'm hearing is that the easiest way to "fix" the game would be to drop the championship prize. If there is no reason to win "no matter what" than there would be no need to field the newest "cheeze".
I don't whine or complain (okay, once in a while, I complain)
about the game. I just play. I do believe that charge and artillery
needed to be nerfed. They were. VTOLS needed to be reigned in.
Well, the new crop of AA vehicles did so. I also believe that tank
drop needs to be nerfed. I think it will be. Draddog recently said
that it was being looked at, carefully.
Is the game perfect? No. However, Wizkids has shown, IMHO,
that they ARE listening to our feedback. The above-mentioned
rules changes (or, in the case of VTOLs, lack thereof) bear this
out. I truly believe they are trying to fine tune the game.
Remember, this game isn't even 2 years old, yet. CBT had a LOT
of kinks that needed to be worked out, at first.
My only complaint, as is the case with many HL players, is that
the design paradigm for the faction needs to be re-vamped.
I'm not going to go into all of that here, as it has been covered
many times before. I have faith that, this too, will be eventually
addressed in some fashion.
Meanwhile, I'll continue to play the game and enjoy it the way
it is. ;)
Unfortunately, for all the unpleasentness that the venue and prize support systems have created, it's all some of us have. The group of people I originally started with all had to quit do to financial or fire related issues (apartment fire bad) or have simply moved away. The only time I can play is the sponsered events at a venue.
I was lucky enough to happen upon a great, quiet little venue. It's not competative (or at least I've never felt it to be), we try to help out the new people, and we all are there to have a good time on a Saturday night. I feel sorry for those who can't enjoy this kind of experience when they play at a venue.
