I'm not exactly the authorative voice on this matter, but my guess is that, no, MWDA cannot be played online in any reliable fashion. If you were to play with physical pieces, you'd have to have exact copies of one another's armies set up, and perfectly synch where you move each piece.
So what about an online game version of it, like how Megamek is available for Classic BattleTech, you might wonder? No way. See, in CBT, you did not really have to own the miniature to play a certain piece. You could say, "Oh, that thing over there is a Warhammer, -7M variant.", and your opponent would just smile and nod.
MWDA requires you own the physical piece in order to play it. Its sales are driven by selling you more pieces; CBT made its sales by pushing more Tech-Readout books, map packs, scenario books, etc. onto you.
Sure, it'd be a little clumsy to use the measuring system MWDA does in a computer game...possible, but a little clumsy. Let's call that a minor point.
What's likely to happen is, if someone released a "Megamek: MWDA Edition" where you could play a good re-creation of MWDA online...WizTopps would sue. You can make a very good case that the game would potentially hurt sales; you don't have to buy boosters in hopes of getting that SS Arrow 4 in a PC game -- you just pick it from a menu.
Of course, I don't see what huge amount of harm such a game would do, but I could present a good case for why it wouldn't happen; WizTopps /would/ get after whoever made it, and send them a very firm "Cease and Desist."
well, you can play VERY simple games online. i use netmeeting. the webcam lets us verify dice rolls, and the whiteboard lets us set up a virtual field to represent unit locations and distances. naturally, it's very difficult to keep tabs on many units htis way, but it does work for 1 on 1 units or anything simple like that.
I figure it would be possible to make something similar to java bloodbowl to MWDA also, but like the man above said, there might be legality issues with Wizkids.
The major problem would be movement and postioning
But all that would require to fix is a large sheet of graph paper with numbers running along the top and letters along the sides. Then convert yer mechs movement from inches to squares. I.e. I want to move my mech six inches toward the northwest corner of the battlefield so I count six squares in that direction, quickly cross reference the location (let's stay the spot I want is AA, 31) announce the my new position. Then the second player decides to attack, he'll give his location (say AA, 21) and and the number a squares between them (10 squares) and shots at me with his Legionnaire. WHAT! he rolled a crit on me! That bastitch! He just stank my battleship.
Anyway it would go something like that, maybe a bit less confusing if I had more time to wite it out.
I've brought up the topic to Draddog, as well as some suggestions so that WK or whoever produced the game could make a decent profit off of it. Microsoft has the legal rights to produce MW computer games, so any game made would involve a collaboration between WK and MS. I personally would love to see a computer version of the game, since I can never seem to find many players in my area that aren't working all day long. Too bad it doesn't seem like it will happen.
I would love to see an online game of MW. I think it would help many new players learn to play a, as well as helping us veterans hone our skills with various units we might never play in a tournament at our venue. Draggon, if you are reading these ( and I know you do), please send out the word to WK that many gamers would love to have an online version of MW to play.
Ummm...
I think that an electronic version of MW Darkage would only be a benefit to the game itself (electronic version of Magic certainly didn't hurt the game!). Players could try any kind of army and then decide what pieces to buy or trade. I believe it would also be really simple to do. Graphics would need a lot of work, but rules are easy.
I'd suggest a freeware version where you can play only booster drafts and a full version that allows you to play whatever you like.
actually the software would not need to be complicated, thou unfortunately im not a software developer, well at least not a programmer :)
personally i belive that eventually someone will go ahead and create something that will be able to simulate mw, thou when that will happen i cant tell :)
i would be delighted if i could play simulation runs online, thou i doubt that i would swap my 'plastic' collection for 'digital' one, even if the mw like something of a game would be awailable
It would be interesting to see a Megamek-like program for MWDA. Of course, there should be some sort of system that limits what players can use...perhaps a player rank system that allows them to "purchase" individual MWDA units. Thus, experienced players can field big boys like Declan Devalis and Jonah Levin, while the new folk stick with non-uniques. And if you're going to keep track of ranks, might as well introduce LE units through that system.
It is possible to create a game engine to replicate the game machanics of MW:DA that could be used online. Take a look at the engine a game called Silent Storm from Nival Interactive uses for an example...
The problem is the ownership/copyright rights...the various rights to the MechWarrior/BattleTech universe is owned by several different companies, and the logistics of getting it online, and keeping the servers running would be $$$
Would it be cool??? HELL YEAH, but its not going to happen
