Point - 1 mech or 5 infantry
star - 5 points
binary - 2 stars
trinary - 3 stars
cluster - 4-5 binaries/trinaries
galaxy - 3-5 clusters
nova - 1 infantry star and one mech star
supernova - 2 infantry stars and 2 mech stars
The inner sphere uses lances of 4 mechs. I don't know the rest of the oragination.
Actually a star is 5 mechs, 10 aerospace fighters, 10 vehicles, 5 Battle armor or 5 infantry. This is how the clans field their armies. Check out my website (the little WWW under my post) for Clan Standard Organization compared to Republic/Inner Sphere armies.

To continue on this one (since the others are incorrect in one way or another):
1 Point could be a mech or 5 infantry/battle armors (as stated above) or 2 aerospace fighters or 2 vehicles.
combine any 5 points to form a star. Continue on as above.
Example a Nova contains a star of mechs (5) and a star of battle armored infantry (25).
A Point is one BattleMech or five infantry troops.
A Star is five BattleMechs or twent-five infantry troops. Infantry troops can also be consitered as Power Armor.
This applied to most of the houses/merc groups in the Inner sphere. Not sure about comstar. Also, past battallion, I am not 100% about organizational structure.
4 mechs to a lance
3 lances to a company
3 companies to a battallion
3 battallions to a regiment
I think 3 regiments made a division but could be more.
Divisions were assigned to a Corp or Theatre or Army or Regimental Combat Team.
Also, sometimes a command lance was added to battallion and above. This, of course, was the norm. There are MANY variations.
This is all from memory so I would appreciate anyone correcting mistakes.
I can't recall the name of the thread, but awhile back I posted the military unit breakdowns for the Regular Inner Sphere armies, Clan regular armies, and the ComGuards/Word of Blake Militia.

I cheated and just copied from the back of the jade phoenx triliogy. I'm guessing vehicles were left out because Jade Falcon uses very few(if any) vehicles.
The clans use a Different System than the IS
Point-1 mech, 1 Aero Space fighter, 2 tanks or 5 Battle armor
Star-5 points
Trinary-3 stars
Cluster- 4-5 Trinary's
Galaxy 3-5 Clusters

3 regiments makes a brigade. 3 brigades makes a corps. 3 corps makes an army.
A regimental combat team was a loose grouping of regiments in the Star League era or a combination of 1 'Mech regiment, 3 armor regiments, 5 infantry regiments, and artillery and aerospace support in both halves of the Federated Commonwealth.
As far as ComStar goes, they use base six instead of the 4/3/3/ system that the rest of the Inner Sphere uses. A Level I formation is one 'Mech, tank, fighter or infantry platoon. A level 2 is six 'Mechs. A level 3 is six level 2s. A level 4, usually called a division, is six level 3s. Ideally, an army was six divisions, but the Com Guard wasn't able to field that many even 15 years after Tukayyid, since they took such severe casualties there. The Com Guard was made up of twelve such armies. It's also notable that unlike most formations, the Com Guards mix units even in their Level 2 formations.
