So wasnt Canadian nationals this weekend? I've heard absolutely nothing about it whatsoever, which I find rather suprising. Was entirely sealed, was it not? Did anyone actually attend, as a result? If anyone DID go, I'm curious about what won the event. Did anyone pull enough artillery to field an arty swarm? Tankdrop? Or was it your typical "I pulled a fatty and am not incompetent so I win, yay!" sealed tournament?
I reeeeeally wanted to go, I had been training for a year with nationals as my goal, only to have the flight bill stop me in my tracks. :( I felt I had a really good chance of placing high too. Argh this summer's been pretty depressing for me.
I'm dissapointed it turned out to be only 3 boosters. I read on one of the sites that it might have been 5 boosters, 450 points or something. Too bad.
Can anyone tell me what the attendance was like? Did all 60 slots fill up? What were the fees involved? The CanGames site is terrible and didn't properly explain the procedure for an event like this.
26 people showed. (about half of last year)
For a 30$ entry fee, it was 4 rounds Swiss (450 pts, 3 sealed boosters), and the top 8 moved on to 4 rounds Single Elimination.
Everyone got a Joel Brane (toss into the pile of Joel Branes I already have..) and Bill Magnilov or whatever his name is. (the agromech.) The top 8 got a few more LEs, the winner got a set of Counterassault and will get a set of FP when it comes out. Plus all the LEs for those two sets.
Top 4 armies were:
1) Artillery army (3 SW Mortar Squads)
2) Artillery army (2 Towed Arrow IV and a SW Arrow IV Tank)
3) Big 'Mech army (DF Bounty Hunter)
4) Partial artillery army with tank drop
It was three Counterassault boosters, and personally, I think Counterassault is one of the worst expansions to play Sealed with. The majority of the set is very poor units, except for a few power units. (which makes it even more likely that whoever pulls the good units will win.)
Low point of the day: Watching someone get disqualified because they didn't know about the SS Arrow IV errata. (they had already played a couple rounds with the incorrect stats.)
I feel for the BattleMaster who had to enforce that call, and the opponent who started the process (accidentally) by simply asking what the FAQ change was.
While a painful decision, I don't think anyone can say it was the wrong one. The SS Arrow IV change was a hugely publicized one, and I don't know why someone would come to a National level event not knowing about it. (actually, yes I do.. the Nationals is open invitation. Grr.)
I think we'll probably get photocopies of errata at future events; that's not a disqualification anyone wants to have to make again.
Masakari. Congrats on your win. They might have been head and shoulders above you but evidently you had luck on your side. A lot of times it's better to be lucky than good. Tho being good as well doesn't hurt. ;)
On that note. WK. How do you justify holding a national or worlds level event and having the only tourny type played be one where it is mostly LUCK that decides who walks away the winner??????? Yes I'm sure most of the people there were at least fairly skilled and many did indeed deserve to be there ... but I think everyone has to admit that there is a huge amount of luck involved as far as what you pull which decides whether or not you are going to do well.
Congrats on the win. Dont mistake my contempt at Wizkids over the style of tournament and nature of the game for contempt for you. In sealed you do what you have to do and you really cant blame anyone for fielding any lame things they happen to pull.
@ Jinx...
Sounds like it was an utterly lame event, to be completely honest. By chance did anyone corner the Wizkids guys and give them an earful about the overall lame-assed state of the game?
To answer one question ,yes, I will be at Gencon, barring any emergency.
It's true, there was a ton of luck involved, and the Sealed-Only format really sucks when this is supposed to produce the best players in the country.
I went to ask one of the Head Envoys as to why the tourney was sealed only. The answer was direct and hostile: WK doesn't have to be there, so either it's sealed or they don't come.
Yay. All of us up here in the frozen north are feeling the love.
Maybe all that Moosehead had something to do with that terse reply? I keep telling you yankees that come up, take it easy.. sure it tastes great compared to that swill Miller churns out, but it's a wee bit stronger than what you be used to.
Note to admins: Moosehead is not a profanity. It's a beer.
