Derek Hasbani's 100-ton Atlas is the most powerful BattleMech I own. Its Alpha Strike Beam Special Equipment allows it to a devastating 10 clicks of damage in one shot, but the downside is that it leaves him shutdown for one turn, and then you have to spend three more turns to bring him back up. He compensates for the long cooling period with Streak Missiles Ballistic Special Equipment. So if you have Derek Hasbani in your force, build the force around him, so you can protect him till he recharges for another Alpha Strike. His speed value leaves something to be desired if you prefer speed, but he's faster than the Fire for Effect series of Hatchetmen. At 285 points, Derek can't be used effectively in a 300-pt. battleforce, but in 450-pt. and above, well, better take him down fast or surrender!
yes, Derek hasbani does suck. If you have to feild an Atlas go for Jonah Levin, or my personal fav, Eribee Childs. Eribee childs is an absolute monster - the 3 damage 2 attack AnP is much better than Alpha strike.
If you are going to use hasbani dump him in water and take a serious amount of arty to take out thiers first, and a load of cheap infantry to play base 'n' break for his alpha strike.
But I really wouldnt take him at all - he has a tendency to blow himself up while people laugh at you.

Originally posted by DarkSpade Okay. Now look at his heat dial.
which is why you field him in water. sure he has the least forgiving heat dial of the atlas' but he is the only one with alpha strike, 6 dmg streaks and he is the most repairable. he has that huge gap of 8 clicks that can be repaired. what is so hard about fire, fire, rest? with Eriabee or Jonah i always fire, fire, vent. 3 turns, 3 orders while you have Derek not absorbing orders every turn. that leaves more orders for infantry, artillery, vtols, tank drop, etc. another big plus...... he is cheaper! it is always good to have that extra ss or merc special forces team in an army.
um well it is on his 2nd click of heat i think that he can do 4 dmg to himself??? that is sorta a bad thing .... um but if he is in a larger battle and well supported he can be very effective.
He does not suck. He just cant be used like other mechs.
hes like the strongest raw power mech there is. His heat dial just needs to be REALLY looked after. Use him every other turn, dont run him, and get him into water asap.
hes definetly not the best fat mech, but i wouldnt go as far as saying he sucks. Hes just one of those "you have to know how to use them" mechs.
And second, anyone who wants to go with "he sucks" obviously hasn't played him. Sure, the heat dial is rough. Sure, he moves slow. But he's got an amazing damage ability. Pound for pound he'll outshoot and outlast just about any mech out there.
Now, you want a one on one match against just Hasbani? Sure, there are plenty that can take him down. But he'll take down quite a few himself.
Big Mech isn't the army of the day, pure and simple. Dereck or any other BM is going to get creamed by VTOLs, arty or swarm. Bounty Hunter, Declan, and the heavy Energy BM's are going to do him harm, But before BH even gets to him, he's going to be targeted for 6, and Streaks let DH hide behind a B1. Keep him from being based, neutralize artillery, and keep him cool, and he's a monster.
Best setup I've seen for him? a W2 in the opp. corner of 2 B3's. DH just popped into the W2 and turned constantly to keep shooting. A squad of hoverbikes kept him from being based, while the giggins dropped off two more hoverbikes to deal with the arty. DH went to TOWN.
I like Dereck just fine, but If you dig the big SS guns there is now another option...Kitsman's Cyclops. Along the same lines and points as Hasbani but also is a command 'mech. Not a dang thing wrong with fielding Hasbani though.
When playing SS just shrug off comparisons of other faction's 'mechs to our 'mechs. Cool running 'mechs isn't our strength, but we use what we have. Our true strengths lie in our pulsing and armor piercing tanks and infantry. We have enough of that to support our hot 'mechs sufficiently and keep them from exploding on themselves.
