First used in a non-conquest format to combat ME F/L in a 1000 point game. Was very sucessful until the F/L wall turned into a death star :) the name of the formatio was given to me by my oppenent.
Fomation is as follows:
Front Line: Mixed ranged Trolls, primarily Troll artillerists, but Troll gunners, and ***Wild Mt. Trolls can be used also. the front line has 12 inch range, toughness attack ratings of 9-11, and a minimum of 3 damage.
Support line: (this is the Key ingediant to the jello) Originally it was Mending priestess, but other variants used Shamens, and Demi-magi. The current "Pure" form uses Elven demi-magi. By using Elven Demi-magi wit *** versions mixed in, you increase the defense of the trolls in front, while giving them normally 2 ME. ALso, the MB ablility of the Demi-magi allows for a 360 degree protection from chargers, and most harrasers. (1d6+2 hurts most things real easily)
Back line: Usually some high powered healers (Corrupted priests) or ML defense untis (Chargers) that protect the Key to how the whole group works. Elemental Priest, EGM, or Eldritch Draconum. Which due to the "chaining" effect of the Defend SA, give sthe WHOLE group a defense of 19.
This formation was able to take out a Heavy BPR tank in 3 turns. with the only damage taken in the form of pushing.
Now, you could connet up to the side of a RLD. But then the formtion loses is allready poor mobility.
There is a way to take this formation out, it is not unbeatable. But it certainly is a powerhouse.
A few explosive shots in the back would definetly be bad along with some high powered F/L shots that avoid the front but roast the back....Strikers, etc. Weaken all the support and the trolls in front lose their zip.
you really think this is the whole army? besides the chargers and bounders in back and stop flanking, as wel as the E. Demi-magi with a 360 arc Magic blast makes it an almost impossible formation to flank.
belive me, I ahve played this against Strikers and F/L lines. not many F/L nons have an attack greater then 11 so you would noramlly need a 8 or 9 to hit the formation besides....
why do you think i have a line of Warrior sprites in front of the formation?
don't try to think of counters, but think of how YOU would use the formation effectively.. i allready todl you it is not fool proof, but it is very effective
your forgething the Unicorn Bladesman in the back row... usually i have about 5 of them convering the EGM to prevent her from getting rammed or based. Unicorn Bladesmen... 11 attack with 3 damage and weapons mastery? all i need is an 8 to hit and I would use a 50 point figure to negate a 150+ figure... yep good trade off.
That is what I call this type of gameplay. It sounds like a conquest version of a turtle. You make this big swirling, shooting, blasting, machine and try to mow everything down in front of you.
I would attack this beast with lots of explosive damage, and I would attack the support groups first, the tear the heart out of it!
bunch of mag.lev techno and a war hatchett and some command rolls... and the chaindefend or the warrior sprites will fall like leaves on a tree in autumn....
war consort... go ahead and do you 2 maybe 3 damage an action. you have to spend at least 2 actiosn to get the rammer to me. so that further reduces the effectiveness. and you cannot count on gettting the command rolls.. you wil lbe lucky to get 2 every turn with 8 commanders. while my trolls will be doing at least 5 damage if not more a turn. :)
The problem with the Jello wall, and trust me, I've seen it in action, is that it is extremely cumbersome.
Battlefield terrain hinders it from advancing in tight formation and the Trolls aren't exactly speed demons.
Magic Lev can strip out the sprite wall, but more rammers will probably be lost than sprites.
It really boils down to what are the scenario objectives. If it is to hold a static position, the Jello Wall has no equal. If it is a frontal assault on a fixed position such as a castle, it will blast the castle to bits. However if it is a seek and destroy type of game, the Trolls tie down the army greatly and with enough sniping, explosive damage and possible ML ramming, it can be worn down.
Of course the real trick would be to go in and nail the central defend piece and break up the chained defense. The chain breaks at its weakest link.
However, your Jello Wall is formidable and is now a classic that everyone around here has seen.
if i do have problems with terrain (and I have) i jsut slpit the formation in 2... since it is all EL i am only losing 1 action a turn by breaking off a part.
but with a 3x6 area to play with all i need is a foot an a half of open space.
jsut make sure the rest of the army holds the line, and does not run forward of the troll line, it works best having your opponent come to you, and not go to them.
