There is a problem with this game, and its that the relics seem to have no balance to them.
It seems that they are arbitraly assigned a point value then given an ability
my latest instance of this was reading over the FW prizes.
Scroch hammer is Ridiculosly good for 30 pts when put on trix.
were as the shield of the pyre is stupid for 34, it has DISADVANTAGES to it and it isn't really all that good, necromantic bonestaff is WAY better for 10 points more, and can be SAFLEY used for those extra points
another example is the magma lance, that thing is AMAZING for its value, i get smite, thundering blow and do extra trample damage W00T
so these relics are small examples i'll get back to this subject on my lunch break
one of the main things that i do not get about relics is that they are an absolute menece to most players, they can EASILY be the the centerpoint of an army and you get some small LE's equiping them to make it so that you get the most use for the cost value
Is this wrong : no
is this balance: no
some of the relics are stupid (tecnomatic atractor for example) some are gimicky (a personal favorite thing in my armies)(for example sawtooth) and some are just REALLY good (galishi sun sword, BoL)
In some way I cannot agree with you. Sure there are relics that seem to be better than other ones for their point value, but every relic has a different purpose. I mean Galeshi Sunsword is cool, but not unbalanced. Put it on Kahn Harrowblade and you have a descent melee fighter, but he still has a defense of 17 what should not be too hard to hit. BoL gives his wielder -2 on defense, wielder takes a click of damage if he fails to hit and it costs 60 points. What is unbalanced about that compared to other relics???
i've been thinking more about my arguments, the BoL is a bad example, but some such as the two necro relics are good examples,
i need to do a little more research, but i thing that the relics really do influence the game in a somtimes to powerful way for somthing i get no points for
Let me try it to explain why Necromantic Bonestaff and Shield of the Pyre are ALMOST the same, but have different point values. You think SoP sucks compared to the Bonestaff, but you have to remember that you only need a
:defense: to wield SoP (what is pretty much common) and for the Bonestaff you need :wand: (what is not so common). Besides that SoP gives his wielder the special ability "defend" and is cheaper, little bit dangerous though.
You can get points for them if you pick them up, which I think is fair because you have to kill the wielder before you would have the option of picking it up anyway, and you should be getting some decent points for that.
I do agree that relics influence the game in a big way, but I think it is a good way. If I want to include a relic, I have to do it at the cost of at least one figure that I could be putting into my army, which means Im loosing out on the number of figures total. Plus, I dont even know for certain in most cases that I will be able to use all the features of the relic. I think the relics are balance fairly well, sure the bonestaff is strong but there are very few people who can wield it, and at 43 points, plus the cost of the figure, it can often be better just to include a regular revenenter at 29 points.
^That was funny...it appears to be a typo, but I know what you mean...
Oh that was great...
Anyways, what DC LE would you use the SoP on? Would it even be worth it? Most people use Priest Sydin with the Necro Bonestaff, but I'm not really seeing any figs that I might use the Shield on.
the Ranger's Plate is ridiculously good for its pionts (I think 26 or something, the only thing i dont get about it is why do they make it have stealth and ghostform??? and one more thing, the Enchanted Fuser Rifle is bs for 25 pionts, it sucks, and heartseeker is useless unless you give it to rava
Rangers plate has stealth so you can block LoS, also youll notice rangers plate takes up two types of slots, thus making it A: Less avliable to every and B: Probally means you can use an item for that slot.
And the enchanted fuser rifle is good because it can give you a cheap boost
Finally, thats the point of heartseeker, its an orc weapon.
K-bow would be worth the cost if it only had one of it's two abilities. But it has both. I don't understand it. It's one of the best relics in the game yet it's also one of the cheapest. Spellbreaker sucks, yet it's nearly TWICE as much as scorch hammer. If the right DC unique comes out SoP would be good but not a spectacular relic. With scorch hammer, it almost seems like they're TRYING to make Varatrix broken. No relic even COMPARES to this thing. It should be at least 50 points. The only thing stopping it from being completely broken is the Solonavi only restriction. Still, for a mere 30 points, you can give varatrix venom, sweep, and the ability to DESTROY AN ENTIRE FORMATION! You could use it on a formation of stupid 10 point guys and still have it make up it's cost. There are far too many undercosted relics...
I was actually hoping for a nice, high defense :defense: DC unique to use SoP on, for the defend, but with their pitiful numbers in dark riders, I doubt that will come true.
I do have to agree, too many relics are over costed, and too many are under costed.
