There are 4 general hero types you can choose from:
Melee - heroes with no/short ranged attacks, but have good attack, defense, and damage values, and with at least one SA that applies to close combat, like charge, sweep, weapon master, etc.
examples: hitash levat, darq the corrupt
Ranged - these heroes have ranges greater than 6 and at least one SA that applies to ranged attacks, e.g pierce, flame/lightning, magic blast, etc.
examples: magus anendu, lord andreus
Rogue - these heroes have very good speed values and either one or two abilities that help in opening chests, like sneak attack, nimble, and stealth.
examples: zenephret, phreggs
Healers - like the name implies, these heroes have healing, magic healing, and/or necromancy. some of them also have nice support abilities like defend and magic enhancement.
examples: pearl, astrus
you may find some heroes that can be considered hybrids of these 4 types. some melee heroes may be able to open chests (vija of vladd), some ranged heroes may do well in melee (red duchess of khamsin), some rogues can go melee (baran skullcracker), and some healers can actually fight due to a good attack value (astrus).
in building a heroic team, i'd recommend at least 1 of each type for a well-balanced team with lots of options. rogues open chests, melee heroes tie up and eventually kill tough spawn while ranged heroes and healers provide support. also, like jenxton said, it's the kind of approach you take to playing that will matter the most in building your team. well, that and what heroes you currently have.
let's take the army i usually use in the dungeons as an example:
Lvl2 Hitash Levat (39) - melee (i'd swap him with Lvl1 darq, but hitash does just fine)
Lvl2 Magus Anendu (37) - ranged
Lvl1 Shaman Og (24) - healer (if i use Lvl1 darq, i swap him with Lvl1 astrus)
hitash at lvl2 has 10 atk and 4 damage (not to mention a short 6-inch ranged attack), more than enough to mow down spawn by himself. anendu has f/l, and can usually burn through hordes of low-point spawn without toughness, softening them enough for hitash to wipe out. anendu begins to shine when he reaches lvl3, as he loses f/l and gains magic blast with a 12-inch range. i usually give anendu the exp i harvest with hitash so he can start blasting through swarms of spawn ASAP. shaman og is primarily a healer, but he can also fight at higher levels.
as you can see, i have no rogue in my team. i find it ok, since i play a kind of "bully" style in the dungeon. if i can't open chests even with slow disarm, i let my opponents open them, then i move in, kill their heroes, and take their loot. my team is built in such a way that my heroes can go toe-to-toe with almost any opposing hero even at an early level.
finally, your choice of spawn to put in the pool can either make or break your little band of heroes. for example, if you make use of powerful ranged heroes, minimize your use of spawn with stealth, limited invisibility or magic immunity (if you're a magic blast fan), as they'll make your life a living nightmare if they appear on your side of the map.
good luck in building your heroic team, and happy hunting! :)
