I have word direct from WizKids on two matters of great importance to anyone interested in SRD OP.
The first is that Venue's will be able to create Shadowrun Tournaments starting July 24th and at some point in the near future they will be able to choose a primary Shadowrun envoy.
My venue also spoke to WizKids regarding prize support. He was told that if he decided to run events listed on their site he would have to provide his own prize support. At this point it is unclear whether or not Venue's will be allowed to purchase special prize support or not, but it is a possibility. The bad news is that because of this policy he is hesitant to run events because WizKids would not allow him to charge even a nominal fee. With the low amount of sales Shadowrun generates it just wouldn't be economical.
I donīt believe that SRD really will be a success without prize support from Wizkids. Donīt get me wrong. I donīt want LE figures but some additional gear would be nice. Letīs hope they put something up for the tournament scene.
If the venues hold free tournaments, I don't think it will be hurt too badly. I know for Heroclix, the vast majority people don't go just to get an LE. They go because they enjoy the game. They pay the entry fee only because of the prize. If there's no fee, not having a prize won't be a problem. My venue holds various game tournaments that are free and winner gets $40 store credit, but this usually only occurs once a month. I hope the $40 thing would be a trend...but would rather have tourneys more frequently, even without any form of prize support.
They are going to run events at my venue. They just aren't going to get official prize support. Even if there are no prizes, I'll still go to have a good time.
Magic: The Gathering has a rather successful tournament scene at my local store, and I don't think that Wizards of the Coast lists tournaments on their site.
However, it is really the only gamestore in my area.

Do the people at your venue smell like they aren't familiar with that whole "showering" phenomenon? At the one place I (used to) go, everyone who played CCGs were similarly competing for the worst personal hygiene prize! I used to play Heroclix there, and smell would always waft in my direction, I just got sick of it. That's why I only go to the one place now...the lack of stinkiness is ideal! (The people at the other place literally had stink lines coming off of them!)
Just to chime in, Wizkids does NOT have a rule against charging for tournaments for any of their lines. Several venues in town do it all the time, and I double checked with opsupport on this issue as well.
Also, the venue supported events WILL be listed on the Wizkids website come August. This is a change from previous procedures.
Crusher, have you ever heard of flyers? Put one up right above or next to where your venue has its Shadowrun figures, and new players will see it. Even better, on the flyer type "GREAT WAY TO LEARN!" and make it apparent that there will be figures there so that people can play before they actually buy. I know that for the demo I'm running, there will be flyers (made by me) and all the figures will be readily available to play with (supplied by me).
So im more than a bit irritated that there possibly wont be any prize support i would have enjoyed the possibility of winning new equipment to have fun with MechWarrior Gets Prize support Heroclix Mage Knight Etc Why not us? I dont know just kind of depressing if theres going to be now new cool equipment type things to have that you cant get out of another figure *sigh*
Who cares about Prize support!!
I play to have fun and to meet new people.
prize support or not...i think prize support is for all those geeks out there who have nothing better to do than brag about the LE they won at the last Geekfest!!!
Mechwarrior is the worst..all those people are super serious and very irratating to be around in a tournament envirement....lETS FOCUS OUR ENERGY ON THINGS LIKE COOL SCENARIOS AND WAYS TO BRING NEW PLAYERS TO THE FOLD RATHER THAN WHINING ABOUT pRIZE SUPPORT OR ORGANIZED PLAY.
