The new stand-alone expansion for the amazing Pirates of the Spanish Main Constructible Strategy Game is here: Pirates of the Barbary Coast! The hunt for gold and glory moves to the shores of Tripoli and the treacherous waters between Crete and Gibraltar as the Barbary Corsairs and their incredible galleys harass and plunder the wealth of the European superpowers! The Spanish, English, French, and Americans must chart a course for history in the Barbary Coast – or lose everything!
Each person can play from one affordably-priced Game Pack. Packs contain two ships, a crew or treasure card, a die, an island or terrain, and rules of play.
I assume the Barbary Corsairs are just pirates. Anyone know if a new nation will be introduced in the set?
Also, Is this set going back in time or were there corsairs and rowed galleys after 1776? That painting looks odd to me...like an ancient sailing vessel going up against a frigate. Where are the cannons on a galley? in between the rowing benches?
I doubt there's going to be a new faction. All the existing factions are mentioned, and the sneak peak for this set were all pirates, and pirates are the likely focus of the set (ie, a lot more than before).
All things considered, I think they'll probably stick to the factions already releashed, instead of risking undercutting one group. As for the Barbary corsairs...cool. Just hope they put the brothers in the game. :)
The Barbary Coast is a stretch of land running along the northern coastline of Africa. The Barbary Corsiars where primarily Dutchmen, most prominent amongst them being Red Beard, and they used galleys maned with slaves. Since slaves where a cheap commodity for the corsairs, galleys where an obvious choice for ships as they could cut through the waves after ships that where having difficulty catching the wind, or if there was no wind. Cannons where generally swivel guns set on the bow or stern of a galley.
At any rate, this will either be the set that introduces the Dutch, or it will be heavily focused on Pirates, and possible the Americans who interacted quite violently with the Corsairs at the time.
