Alright my buddies and I have challenged eachother to create our ultimate 1000 point armies (two of us actually had our original 'ultimate' armies as including Poseidon) and since for christmas I recieved this very large set of Vanguard units (with a few Domination thrown in here and there [and Headmaster and Echo 01]) I decided to try to rebuild my ultimate army... and this is what I've come up with (note... it's not made COMPLETELY of Vanguard stuff... in fact... there's only like... 2 or 3 things in it actually from Vanguard... just getting the stuff made me want to start over)
994 pts:
242 “Onslaught” Madcat Mk IV
62 Willick, “Lizzie”
8 recruit Clan Wolf
19 R.I.S.C. Hyper Laser
the whole idea of this army is that EVERYONE (on my side atleast) can shoot straight through blocking terrain without using Streaks or indirect fire...
"Onslaught" with Lizzie and Hyper Laser is able to fire 21" for 6 damage and doesn't need to worry about having L.O.S. thanks to Lizzie's Sharpshooter ability
"Jack" with Julz will cancel out blocking terrain for "Reaver" and "Grey Hunter" ... the Mechanical Repair is there mainly as a precautionary move... in case they pack a lot of streaks or artillery and actually hit my guys... which I know one of em will most likely try using atleast his Liao Arrow IV
"Reaver" with Nikki, in addition to the fact she's got a 16" ballistic w/ AP, is also there for precaution, using her Advanced Anti-Missile System + the Protecting the Pack ability to block a fair amount of incoming ballistics... and the Inferno Ammo will slow down their mechs so they take longer getting around to where they can hit me
"Gray Hunter" with Gwin is there for two reasons mainly... 1. Guiding the Pack ability gives my people +1 attack against the unit she hits (which with Jack she can hit stuff behind blocking terrain) and 2. her Anti-Personnel to chew up incoming Infantry formations... and then the R.I.S.C. Viral Decoy Jammer will... obviously block out Decoy................ unfortunately a friend I told this build to pointed out I'm pretty much the only one of us who ever really tries to take advantage of Decoy... so if anyone has any ideas of what I can do with 15 points that will make things better please tell me
any input appreciated
and if you're interested in seeing what army I had before:
Poseidon with his gunner only
the two LE infantry that came with Poseidon
Davion Hellstar with Judith Faber and Coolant Pod (both borrowed from a friend... and yes I realize Judith is Comstar... she was pretty much the only Assault pilot I had access to so we skipped the faction rule for that)
and then some artillery piece that I can't remember... maybe the Swordsworn Paladin Defense System...
basically... I wanted to use Poseidon with his infantry just to see how they worked... and then the Hellstar with the Coolant Pod was something I always wanted to try... because 5 damage, pulse for another 5... next turn do the same, and again next turn, then destroy the pod and boom... 30 damage in 3 turns and ending up back on green on your heat dial
Oh yeah and if you want to suggest units... try to keep the suggestions within Steel Wolves/Wolf Hunters/Clan Wolf... as they have my preferred style... long range Ballistics (and I'm also trying to keep the army faction pure)
An update on this army... it performed rather well. The only problem was that my opponent was fielding a RD army... so the more damage he took the better he got.
I managed to take down his Thor and his entire force of infantry (thanks to Gray Hunter's Anti-Personnel) before losing anything of my own, though by that time Reaver had taken a lot of damage.
At the end it was down to Onslaught vs his Anubis, Tokugawa, and X-Axis (the only gunslinger he owns)
X-Axis was near useless but his Tokugawa hadn't taken any damage and his Anubis had only taken a little bit... and I had managed to do 2 out of 3 rolls as Critical Misses...
We decided to quit there as it was obvious who would have won...
In the end the casualties were:
My army:
Gray Hunter
Reaver
Jack
His army:
Thor
2 Ravagers
1 Clan Battle Armor
2 Thunderbird Battle Armor
Osiris
X-Axis (in the next turn I pretty much would have been able to put it in salvage)
and also I switched out the Viral Decoy Jammer for Extended Range Ammo on Gray Hunter's secondary attack with the Anti-Personnel
