“Are you sure about this location?”
“Let’s just say after a few recent mishaps, J.B. wants a nice secure location.”
“On that rock? You do realize that we’ll lose at least half the crew.”
“Now, now, I’m sure Mister B has given you a list of certain employees he wants used in situations like this….”
“I thought that was a joke.”
“Joke? Oh no, Jacob Banson definitely knows you don’t mess around with security.”
“And you, why are you going there?”
His eyebrow, barely perceptible beneath the dark leather patch rose ever so slightly, “I’m security.”
When I first read scenario two for this month, I thought, “ugh, another scenario where I’m just going to build a normal army and kill my opponent.” I’m not sure exactly what the average non “battle armored” infantry has in terms of clicks, but with four rolls every time your turn comes around, the expected life of every infantry is probably going to average 6 turns. That coupled with the six construction tokens that need to be removed certainly puts the prospective builder on the clock. Add to that prospect that the defense needed to remove a construction token being 22, attempts to remove the token require serious effort. It would be one thing if the scenario stated that the winner is the one with the most vc3s, but the simple change of tiebreaker being switched to vc3 vrs vc2 makes the effort of deploying too many points for construction can lead to serious problems when attempting to gain one of the other vc’s needed for victory.
Then I thought to self, “self, why not try.”
The first thing to work around is the time factor. The building needs to be built as quick as possible, and as cheaply as possible. We don’t want to give the opponent too much of an advantage in the upcoming fight.
Now how does one hit 6 times on a defense of 22 with repair gear? One can take advantage of the special conditions. Salvage mech… AH HAAA HAAA okay if it got +4 to all attacks this scenario, I’d think about it, for about uhm a second. Combat Engineers don’t live so long and their attack values are low. Combat technicians are definitely doable, but again without the battle armor, their life expectancy isn’t very high, but since we need 3 non battle armored infantry definitely a consideration.
What are our other options? We can put repair gear into mechs, but then we make them less effective for a fight, and tie up more costs into the construction. We can attack in formation, but again, tie up more units into construction, or we can lower the target goal.
Also we have to make sure that the units we put into construction are useful in the upcoming fight.
So what did I come up with? Again I wanted to make sure my construction squad can serve multiple roles. I also wanted to get the jump up with early construction, and I wanted to minimize my loss of points when the conditions and enemy engaged my position. (whew I just read the rules thing and now I’m happier about my army)
BR Construction Squad:
2 BR j100 Repair vehicles (22 pts)
1 Posiedon CT (10 pts)
1 br peasant (fodder) cheap loss
1 tora’s mob (7pts) cheap lots o clicks
The Reasoning: Since most likely the non battle infantry is going to die, it’s best to keep them as cheap but as long lived as possible. I’ve chosen the br peasant cuz it is the ultimate in cheapness and fits into the theme, and tora’s mob because it’s bansons’ and they like mobs, and they last forever. The point defense on the Br Repair vehicle drops the construction attack value to 17, a more easily obtainable number. So Turn one:
Drop Terrain:
Combat tech attack/repair (10+4 ) bonus to target of 17 anything but a critical miss
Two repair vehicle attack….
Next turn repeat.
Hopefully by turn two I can have the thing built and people inside!
Other options I had included light repair mech with rapid strike.
Now with regards to the other part of the army build. With all this repair sitting around, what better use than Banson mechs? And I like throwing down the Hammer!!
Any comments? Flames? Remember I’m just a scrub
p.s. I'm trying this out tonight, so if you're from the venue I'm about to play at, please disregard this thread. Thanks
I would offer advice, but I've only been playing (uh, er . . . fighting) a little over a year . . . and I couldn't improve on that strategy anyway. Try it out!
I had this thrown together, but my son will have to take my spot tonight and play:
Hammerfall
Jack
Anti-Personnel
BR j100 Repair vehicle
Poseidon CT
x2 Steiner CTs
x3 BR Monocycles
Spirit Cats Anat APC
BR M1 Marksman Tank
The idea is to drop shelter close to my Hindering terrain and have J100 Repair vehicle sit back in the "H" while the M1 Marksman parks into the Hindering with it's 23 defense and 14" range and provides cover.
The x3 Monocycles and Combat Techs will ride in transport shelter. Mono's have Anti-Personnel and can pop out when needed.
I will have exactly 6 in the shelter for the VC points. The Anat will hover around looking to keep infantry and/or mechs off the shelter while Hammerfall kills any and all infantry and tries to dismember any enemy mechs while having the J100 to fallback to.
It should leave enough cover around the shelter to allow Hammerfall to repair and he's nasty enough on his own to be alone!
this is my counterpart to the wk id (gr8a's).
Don't worry I won't be at the venue today...
I don't mean to steal ideas but that point defense thing... I would've never thought of that!!! (looks like I may have to go with something like that (DF standard foot 16 defense?)
Interesting army...
of course, I had to go prove myself wrong. I won one round when after he captured my Hammerfall with a roll of 18. I still won because I had more vc3... <sigh>
I didn't get to play the army I posted above, but my 15 year old son did and he went undefeated!
Apparently he had two rounds where he was put at Salvage and was able to repair back into prime. That BR J100 is simply the best repair unit I have ever seen!
Stormwind was a great prize for a Ghost Bear fan like myself! Now just need to find Claw and a few others. TW1Kell pulled off a sweet one and got me Hermod! I purchased Light Mech Inferno Flamers on ebay instantly!
