Today i was playing a Superman deck against my opponent's Brotherhood deck. Going into turn 7, I had a cadmus labs face up in my resource row, and my 6 and 4 drop supermen out. He had priority, so we both layed a resource, and then in his recruit phase he recruited Avalanche whose card text reads...
Activate >>> KO target location an opponent controls. That opponent puts the top card of his deck face down into his resource row. Use this power only if you control another Brotherhood character.
He immediately activated and KOd my cadmus labs. He then said that I had to get rid of one of my Supermen because of uniqueness...
My question is, before I KO my cadmus labs, can I activate it so that my character cards named Superman are not unique for this turn? or do I get no chance to respond to his character's activated power? Also, would I have to get rid of a character right then or would it wait until the start of my recruit phase, or the end of my recruit phase?
Uniqueness is giving me a headache...
Luckily, the card I replaced my Cadmus labs with was another cadmus labs, so his plan was foiled and I was safe... =)
The game only checks for uniqueness when you recruit a character. Once they were both in play, destroying Cadmus Labs would have no effect on them from a uniqueness standpoint.

Ok, this concerns me a little, what exactly do you mean? By the sounds of it you are not playing though the turn correctly. THe player with initiative does his Resource, Recruit, Formation steps, then the next player does his Resource, Recruit, Formation steps. You do not take turns for each step.
in my opinion you conflict would be resloved like this:
He activates Avalance
You activate cadmus...making Superman not unique..
You existing supermen are not in check because uniquess is only check when recruiting. And also you are able to recruit a new superman without KOing becausethe Cadumus labs doesnt need to be there for the activate to be in effect.
Ok to follow up on this since I am not 100% on the uniqueness rules myself.
What checks for uniqueness during recruit?
Example
If I recruit Kara Zor-El on turn 6, and I happen to have 2 Superman: Clark Kents in play, do they check for Uniqueness or does only Kara check?
And since this came up in my LoA deck today.
When does a location check for uniqueness? The moment it's flipped and ONLY then or does it check again later (Say during the recruit step).
I suppose the bottom line question I'm really asking is.. How often do things check for uniquness? Only once ever unless the issue comes up again or every recruit step (or when one comes into play in the case of locations)?
uniqueness is only checked for the character that you just recruited, and the other characters on the table are ignored if they do not have the same name as the newly recruited character.
It answers my questions exactly. Thanks. And it tells me we've been playing Cadmus/Supes Red wrong all this time. (ie paying end, exhausting Cadmus unnessacarily)
How uniqueness works with scarlet spider, it´s says that character named spiderman is not unique this turn if a reveal that card from my hand. So if i do that i can put my spidermans in play. iwhat happend n the next turn?
all of them are going to the Ko Pile or if I show the scarlet spider card again they still remain in play. ¿?
In short more than one unique character of the same name can be in play at the same time so long as they were legally allowed to enter play with out a check for uniqueness when it occurred.
so cards like fisk tower and dual nature and even forever people can allow you to cheat the uniqueness in ways other than just the obvious superman and spiderman ways.
As an example---revealing Scarlet Spider allows you to recruit the 5-drop Spider-Man without sending the 3-drop Spider-Man to the KO pile, yes.
And in case any posters to the thread need one more wording of the okay-ness of same-named characters remaining in play:
If you're planning to recruit a character named Spider-Man, then you would need to reveal Scarlet Spider in order to bypass uniqueness. If you are not planning to recruit a character which has the same name as a character you control, then you do not need to worry about uniqueness at all.
Once Spider-Men are in play at the same time, their sharing a name will not violate the uniqueness rule.
