No.. it would mess up the game entirely. Every deck would be forced to play resource acceleration to play at the same pace. All decks play at the same pace in VS.. it's what you do with your pace that matters. Play that four drop, or underdrop for something cleverer?
In addition to the ones mentioned, Franklin Richards and Alcia Masters in a way, Unfair Advantage sort of, and the 8/9 drop that steals all your opponents locations.
Originally posted by dragonseth We have looked through like every card we can find, but we have yet to find any sort of resource acceleration. Is there some form of it in Vs.?
More so than in any other game, Vs would suffer dire consequences from resource acceleration. Do not expect to see any form of resource acceleration that gives you a resource point to spend on characters without also giving it to your opponent without a extreme sort of penalty (Alicia Masters and Franklin Richards give you an idea...any attack at all on them, and they bounce back to the hand, the opponent's character(s) ready, and can attack another target; in other words, you need an extreme amount of luck and dedicated space to try and pull it off...not bloody likely).
It's because of the nature of the characters. If a player gets even a single jump on the curve permanently, the opponent is quite literally done for. For a rough example, let's say on turn three you get a free resource drop and your opponent does not. On turn four, a critical turn, I get a 5-drop to my opponent's 4-drop. Here's how the rest of the game plays out:
Turn 4: I drop a 9/9. My opponent drops a 7/7.
Turn 5: I drop a 12/12. My opponent drops a 9/9.
Turn 6: I drop a 16/16. My opponent drops a 12/12.
Turn 7: I drop a 20/20. My opponent drops a 16/16.
With a just the stats alone, before counting any plot twists, etc, that leaves me approximately 22 endurance above my opponent. That's nearly half my endurance total without having to play a single plot twist or use a single payment power. And yes, my opponent gets PTs, etc. So do I. I will win with that sort of an advantage each and every time. Without a spectacular amount of ATK pumps on both offense and defense, your opponent has virtually no chance of ever (coming even remotely close to) catching up. Basically, more than in any other game, it is a horrible unbalance to be behind the curve all game.
As has been pointed out, Takion jumps both players up a resource, and is a 6-drop. The Manhunters can drop "above the curve" but it is not quite that simple. Two 3-drops are just barely ahead of a 4-drop (two 4/4s compared to a 7/7). Masters of Evil can generate "free" resource points, but it can't be used to drop characters or equipment, just pay for payment powers (and at the cost of not playing any more plot twists for the turn, or not being allowed to play any characters or equipment).
This is why so many of the best characters in the game can "jump the curve". That is, attack or defend against characters with a higher cost. This is also why such characters always have some sort of glaring downside or extra cost.
I would not expect to see any "resource ramping" in this game. Vs can't handle the mechanic. Resource acceleration is, hands down, the most powerful (and abusable) mechanic in the vast majority of CCGs, Magic included. It is more powerful than search, draw, discard or control. It is just mind-numbingly broken, in the truest sense of the word.
If you consider Hero's UNited with Alicia Master and Xavier School to allow you to recruit Thing and Torch earlier, then that should be resource acceleration.
But, again, you still need either have two ways to ready them, or to have them survive from an early turn. Otherwise, you're just recruiting them this turn, which means you spent an extra resource point on them anyway.
yup, franklin richards is good if used well, and with a bit of luck. turn 1, drop him, turn two, he readies, activate, recruite mr. fantastic for 1 cost, recruit antman, recruit invisible girl for free. you have 4 characters on turn 2. it would really be amazing if you pull that combo off, especially that signal flare has a 3 threshold
