(Twelve random rares for the first person to identify the film that holds that quote, with a coherent summary of the historical conditions that caused it to be so powerful, and an explanation of how it applies to the current situation in the Vs. System community.)
Okay Realms, enough is enough. It's time to act like adults around here before the kids get the wrong idea. Hang on tight for Stu's Soapbox on MLK Day.
The PCQ in Winter Park this weekend reminded me that all this talk of the community "burning" and the goodwill of the game "crumbling" is nothing more than hot air. Let me try to talk prose.
After PCLA 2 there was a slight wave of trendy hate that bloomed and faded on the message boards. Then there was a great deal of talk about a leaked spoiler and the "massive damage" that it could do to the game. You would think the sky was falling on the tight-knit bonds of community that we worked so diligently to build and maintain around here the past two years. It's simply not true.
The PCQ I attended was friendly, fun, and free of any hint of the rancor that we sometimes see online. It was refreshing. We had more people than ever and everyone had a good time. There was no bickering or rumor mongering, we simply played the game we love with a bunch of friends on a Saturday afternoon and it was good.
Remember when there was a call for "Ambassadors for the game"? What happened to that? Let's all remember that this community is still strong and healthy no matter what drama gets stirred up on the forums.
Tell me something good. Let's show them we are men of parts.
Richard Burbage -The Master of the Revels despises us all for vagrants and peddlers of bombast. But my father, James Burbage, had the first license to make a company of players from Her Majesty, and he drew from poets the literature of the age. "We must show them that we are men of parts. Will Shakespeare has a play. I have a theatre. The Curtain is yours."
It's from Shakespeare (in love).
(edit) [now that I'm back from breakfast]
I'm glad to hear from you that Armeggeddon hasn't arrived just yet for the game.
I personally couldn't care less about the spoilers rumor. My next big event after the sneaks will be 10K Boston, so I guess that's reason enough for me not to care.
But, if it did happen, they would be afflicted by the immorality of it. Such actions do not make a community healthy, and neither does spreading rumors about such.
As far as the "Tell me something good" part, two things come to mind:
> I made spidey clones top 8 a pcq.
> Curve Sentinels are down for the count.

It is, and that's our first entry. It is a bit light, still missing the historical context and the application to the Vs. System community at present.
Due to the endless generosity of Stu's Random Rare Binder, there will be three prizes awarded. Orange Soda Man gets twelve random rares for being quickest on the google. (PM me a snail mail address and I'll get them out tommorrow.)
Second place will go to the first complete entry, 12 random rares and an Alfred.
The champion Man of Parts will recieve twelve random rares and a Fizzle.
I don't think the differance between the online and "in the flesh" attitude of people is suprising. 98% of the people who act like morons on here either do not have the spine to stick to their guns in the "real world" or are just pretending to be "e-tough" in a feeble attempt to get people to notice them (which in turn is supposed to make up for their cripplingly low (and often well deserved) self-esteem.
Some of the stuff I read on here reminds me of an episode from one of my favourite Brit-Coms - Blackadder
Blackadder : "Baldrick, it's really important that you have an opinion of your own. What do you think?"
Baldrick : "I think it's really important to have an opinion of my own"

Well said. (Black Adder is so good that we get it here in the states on cable.)
I have actually never seen a single player take the bile from the message boards and display it face to face. I have seen young men laugh at childish e-wars and repeat the words they have read from their favorite "haters", but the mean-spirited attitudes simply do not carry over. I would say that 98% of the Vs. System players are actually friendly people in real life, even though a majority of them are also a bit shy. I understand the bias that my own happy dispostion brings to the data, but I have a good time with almost every player I am paired with.
As far as the attitude thing goes, I completely agree Kamiza. It's really sad that some people who are "socially disadvantaged" take it out on some of the users in our community here; or maybe they don't even take it out on users individually but instead act inaccurately of themselves outside of the "real world."
I'm really lucky in that my store has a bunch of really friendly people, but when I've ventured out into tournaments, a lot of the people I've met seem to have a hard time with me talking to them. Is it a mistake to say that the vast majority of gamers have trouble talking to people in a "normal" way? One illustration of this was when I went to 10K London last year, after I was done, I thought it polite to seek out Mr. Fong (TO) and offer my thanks and congratulations on a great tournament. He looked at me as if I was speaking in a foreign language.
Most of the players I've met at tournaments have been either excessively introvert or just plain rude. Before the start of one PCQ match, I offered a handshake and the guy looked at me for about 30 seconds before he realised what I was doing and that I wasn't going to budge until the he shook my hand. Wanker or socially retarded?

I honestly have not seen that many low-level social skills in Vs. tournaments. Since I am a teacher and I am accustomed to scolding little kids, I have voice-slapped a few babies at the neighboring Yu-Gi tables on occasion, but honestly our Florida Vs. PCQs and all the 10Ks and of course the PCs have been free of this type behavior.
Not sure were everybody els plays, but the north carolina / virginia, starcity games are nothing but 100% friendliness. Everyone is very and kind and open to starting conversations with people they dont even know. Everyone has friendly games was up for a handshake and was laughing and having fun the whole time, its a shame all tournament scenes apparently arnt that friendly.
In Winter Park, there were 30+ for sealed and 40 for constructed. Biggest I've seen in a while. In the first round, I played a guy who had only been playing for a week. We were friendly, he stayed the whole day, and he had a great time. I'm sure we'll be seeing him again. He had a great experience. It should be that way for everyone, so everyone will walk away with an "I can't wait to do that again" attitude.
And for those that were there late, the only wanker was the guy playing heroclix, screaming, "You can't poison my guy" at a little kid. Jeez. I guess we're safer than clix.
