After spending the last few weeks putting together several of the top tier decks and playing with them, I have to say that there were some decks that I just could not stand playing, they won games but I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.
I spent years as a magic player playing control decks (I was that prick with mono blue or blue/red), and I was good at it. My first VS deck was Doom, and I was good with it.
Over the past few weeks I've played GLOCK, Titans, NS, DIG, Child Lock, SS, pretty much anything you can think of, all in the name of competition. I went through decklists for the top 8 of every recent tourney looking at what was winning and tried my hand at them, all whlie trying to find the perfect deck to beat my opponents senseless with.
But while I was playing tonight at legue something hit me. Sure I had my opponent completely locked down every turn, but I wasn't enjoying the game, I was bored.
I've played this game since it's inception but have allways felt that the game was just OK, that it could have been better. Well several weeks ago I put together FoE and I had an absolute BLAST playing it. I couldn't believe that this was the same game.
Years of playing control in Magic had made me believe that I was in fact a control player, that was my niche. I'd played aggressive decks here or there but they didn't thrill me that much.
What I want to know is what deck surprised you the most? What did you have the most fun playing in spite of yourself?
I urge you to put down the deck you're comfortable with and try something new, try something you wouldn't normally play. You play SS? Try X-Stall or NS, hell, try something like the New Gods! You never know where you might find something truely..... fun.
FoE forever (Hmmm, now to put together Gleevil)
P.S. Top Tier decks CAN be fun. You might find that you absolutely LOVE locking someone down with NS, you never know. So don't believe people that tell you that fun decks are only for friendly games.
i used to be a HUGE control player back in my magic days also so i know how you feel, but my 2 favriote decks to play are spiderfriends (my first deck ever made and i am consantly making changes to it) i just love seeing the deck go, and when it does really well it makes me even happier.
the second deck would have to be Titans, i love this deck to death and will more then likly never take it apart, i will ocassionally take a break from playing it but when i pick it back up my smile brightens right back up
In my short stint in Magic I was real big in the aggro department. However I find that to be really boring in VS (play SqS rush in once, maybe two, Hobby Leagues and I'd rather eat rusty nails). I currently have to decks that I have the most fun with, Titans (which never, and I mean never, works for me) and my AI/F5 aggro control deck (hounds lock, meet bug lock!).
I love basically playing any legacy team from DC origins. I think they have the best character to ability translation, and really fun effects, like fizzle, TTG, tower of babel, and Kidnapping.
I like playing My Own Decks. I've used a Darkseid's Elite and New gods deck that would give you netdeckers a look that just says "huh?". I'm a fan of the comics, that's why I play unusual teams. I'm not a fan of people who use the hobby league as an excuse to build someone else's deck (ie. big bat, TT, FF fun, whatever other pet names you use for these decks.) to beat up on a casual player. I may not win much, but I have fun playing decks that I come up with.
I've been tweaking a Superman/Batman power-up deck ever since the Crisis card came out. Being a comics fan/casual player, that Crisis card can justify any matchup storywise, and my fanboy heart just loves seeing a board full of multiple Supermen and Batmen.
I love the Squadron but hate rush decks. The alternative-to-breakthrough curve build makes whatever game I'm playing a lot more interesting, and if i make it to turn 7, my opponent usually isn't expecting the Power Princess' ability. (Yeah, Arcanna's the better drop, but I like the art on PP.) It's way too inconsistent to be anywhere near competitive, at least the way I build it, but I have a good time.
And then there's that Team Superman/Crime Lords combo... Come to think of it, i don't think i've ever been really interested in a killer competitive deck. I just play to utilize all the nifty true-to-the-source mechanics, and i get bored too easily with the strategies I read about over and over again in the forums. That, and i don't have the $$$ to load up on Beatdowns and the like. New School/Old School/Whatever School may win games, but if I were in this to make money, I'd A) spend way too much time on this game and B) just make it easier on myself and learn to play poker. A deck of regular playing cards is only three bucks.
I really enjoy playing the off curve aggro decks like AGL and FOE. I like decks that require a decent level of interaction. Never been much of a solitaire fan so i tend to stay away from some of the control decks.
I don't enjoy the comics at all, but I really enjoy the Fantastic Four.
Especially Pier Pressure - four turns of hoping your opponent doesn't do too much damage to you, and come turn five your character overload themselves with equipment to the point of wreaking all colours of havoc.
I love League of Doom. The one that plays Terrax and Anti-monitor. That deck is just a blast to play. Nothing like dropping the bomb and clearing the board.
i've always loved playing wierd decks. the kind that make people go what is that. lately i've been playing my Curve Un (Riegn of Terra and affliated characters). its my favorite deck. it changes with every new set that gets released so its never the same.
My other favorite deck was Takion/Dr. light. try to make it to turn 9 and boost Dr. Light to bring as many characters back. recently i'm trying it with Green lantern for stall.
Competitively, I really enjoy playing the AGL deck. It was the first deck in some time that really fit my style, and its just a blast. For fun (and trying to get competitive), I LOVE my Turbo Alicia deck. Turn 4 ELBET, and you can pick up your board btw. So much fun! And it has Longshot!
