Listen, the Gellerman attack on Prosak really got me wondering. Why do front page authors always get jumped... no matter who they are? It has happened here since the early days and it happens again with every article. It can't be just me, I don't write here anymore.
Is it the price of fame? Is it the nature of a competitive community? Is it just a few "complete pricks" who insist on imposing their nasty righteousness upon the rest of us in the name of proving their intelligence? Is it just light hearted trash talking? Is it jealousy?
With fame comes "haters". It's true in a lot more places than just here. Some of it is deserved, some of it is not, but I doubt anyone really lets it bother them. The person who always comes out looking worse is the "hater".
People are always going to jealous at what they don't have, or the things they lack enough determination to get. We diminish these things to console ourselves and cover up the fact that we feel inadequate.
I have to admit that when I look at some of these pros or these good players sometimes I do get resentful too. It's all too easy to fall into this mentality especially when these people have visible flaws that are easy to attack, and which makes it easy for us to neglect their achievements.
If you can find someone who can celebrate your achievements without that plight of jealousy or hatefulness, that's a good sign that you've found a quality friend.
Are we deliberately not trying to name names here?
I think anyone who takes their time to think something out is more reliable than someone who can't even take the time to spell correctly.
I can't see it being jealousy as much as it being self-righteousness. Being the one who cries out "This article sux" is apparantly trying to show off.
Has this person ever proved his value to this community? That is the real question. This reminds me of another board I visit infrequently... Pojo. (For Yu-Gi-Oh and not Vs.) And the person who has the most posts is given more credit. Why?
yet i see some points .while i do agree there is jelousy involved it also has to do with somewhone being a a hole and trying to show off.while i do agree that the article was less than great its there for the newer people to gain insight from.
i do actually hate thiose who say "i made day (2 or 3) when did u" it just seems soo smug.
Although I agree that a lot of it is either jealousy or competiveness and all that, I think a large part of it is just a complete lack of civility on the part of the 'haters.' What I mean is that, like in the Prosak article, there are those who actually disagree with the strategies or opinions expressed. Whereas there are plenty of realmers who are quite capable of engaging in a serious, cool-headed discussion, there are just as many who cannot disagree or post their own opinion without being a complete ass in the process. These people are usually the same in real life, but they take it to another level when it comes to posting on a forum (as typing up a monologue on these things tend only to boost the writer's opinion of themselves).
I think we also have to take into account the age factor. He's only 19. Believe me, from first hand experience, I know he can be a bit immature, but he means well. A lot of us here are older and can handle situations a little bit better and be more "civil."
I also think "social ineptitude" is another factor. Let's face it, we're all gamers, which already puts us as outcasts of society (in my opinion). So the stunting of social development/skills might result in people being "pricks." It just so happens that a lot of the "pricks" are famous pros (not just in this game), so it is more high-profile, easily seen.
If there is only one crab in a bucket it would certainly escape.
However, when there is more than one crab in the bucket, if one tries to crawl out, the other crabs would grab hold and pull it back down so that it would share the same fate as the rest of them.

Um, what?
By 19 years old, people should know better than to be immature on an internet forum for the sake of being immature on an internet forum.
If you said he was 13, I could see your point, but 19? Ridiculous.
Well, maturity develops differently for each individual. Like I said (since I preceded it), gamers sometimes lack the social development growing up so when they are grown, they might be a little "behind." For the record, not all 19 year olds have "common sense."
I gotta say that I am impressed as much by the fact that Adam himself didn't jump in there and argue defending himself.
I think if Alex had simply expressed an opinion in a constructive way instead of going off like an immature being, there wouldn't be an issue.
Maybe Alex and Adam are friends, and he was just ribbing his friend, maybe they are lovers and he was just venting. Hell, they might not even really exist for all i know. I might be retarded and drooling in a corner in a hospital somewhere and all of you are figments of my imagination.
The questions, I think, are really 'how important are the opinions of others?' and ' are the opinions of others worth more based on their accomplishments?'.
