My local store is supposed to be having a draft this week, MTU, and I havent drafted the set yet, so Im looking to find what strategies people have found to be the best deck types? Unfortunately with Alex Brown not writing limited articles anymore there is a void in that department.
Here are some sample draft packs from the Strategy and Tactics section, including conversations on what should be drafted from them and why, and what you could expect to wheel around the table.
Marvel Defenders and Underworld are the safest meaning deepest. You can draft a safe curve deck with them and be relatively okay. Spider-Friends isn't as deep compratively IMO, but still relatively okay.
There's a bunch of archetypes, just some I've seen from my experience.
Moon Knight beats - Look to pick up turn long pumps, Astral Projection, Moon Knight etc.
Syndicate Rush - The good thing about this is that you can get some absurdly good picks on the lap back. The problem is that if someone else is drafting it you can be in trouble. The Contract is really good here, as I think you will want to be picking up Cripplers and Howard the Duck.
In Limbo - This deck revolves around an uncommon so it's not that easy to pick-up. In Limbo is just great with guys like Morlun/Mordred/Mephisto. The life gain means you can probably go to 8.
I've had pretty good luck with Underworld, mainly because not many comic fans draft them. And it's usually not too difficult to get a Hellstorm (or even Morbius) dual loyalty team going if you plan for it. I've drafted this and gone through my entire deck a few times. (Dweller in Darkness FTW)
I personally stay away from Syndicate, because I find it hard to make their endurance burn worth it. (some must be much better at this...I suck at it). I have for sure won a few games watching a player burn himself with Razorfist/Alien Symbiote.
Wildpack is a great idea. I forced it once and had a good day. What worked for me was splashing Nova (for the free stun and then Capture Net) or 4 drop concealed Spidey (lots of discard available with Bounty Hunt).
Maybe if it's made out of ceramics, that way you could say, 'But dude, it's ceramic it can't hurt no one, it would brake on impact.' Then you stab people with shards of ceramic rapier as it broke on impact...wah?
One of my favorite MTU tactics in draft has been to go Defenders / Spider-Friends. There are a lot of characters with good defensive tricks whose stats are sufficient that one can gum up the opponent's attack steps without sacrificing too much your own attack power. I'm a big fan of Gargoyle and Beast helping to wall out the field in the earlier turns so you can build up to a devastating end-game, one which can let any random 8-drops you might find floating about ensure victory. I don't have a lot of highly competitive draft experience with the set, but it's fairly reliable if you're not at a table where everyone grabs those two teams just 'cuz.
I always go for a team I am very familar with...Sinister Syndicate in this case=). If I can't get them I go with Spider-Friends...Underworld takes to many rares to draft properly in my opnion although some of their characters are useful.
