Upper Deck has made some terrible moves lately with regard to Yu-Gi-Oh. Phantom Darkness contains some absolutely broken cards that have reached outrageous prices. The supposed "saving grace," the Gold Series, was also a colossal letdown -- the most sought-after card is criminally shortprinted, and packs are $20 a pop.
I've seen people leaving the game and going to Magic just because they feel like they have to play a TCG, and Magic is there.
What better time to push Vs.?
Don't get condescending toward Yugs -- it's a fun game that I myself play. But if you show some jaded players some cheap, competitive Vs. decks (stay away from Legends sets, and don't be afraid to push Checkmate / X....a new player is a new player) you could easily pique their curiosity. With the right push, we could convert some people.
People are just now realizing that game is too expensive?
Not when your only way to win was to build a 'competitive' deck which can usually cost in excess of $ 200.
...now?
$200 is actually cheap for that game. Its usually around $600-$1000 unless you get lucky with packs.
Uh...dude, the thing that made Yugioh deplorable was this banned list. It's almost like Type 1 Magic (or it was at one point, IDK, I haven't played in 9 years). Spend a ton of money, around $1000 for a good deck, and then the games end by turn 6 typically. The game is bad. Dark Armed Dragon...grrs.
I dont know if you guys realize this or not, and i say this in every yugioh bashing thread (which this apparently now is)
Vs would NOT exist if yugioh wasnt as popular as it is. I doubt it would still be around now if it wasnt for yugioh.
it seems like every other thread is becoming yugibashing.

An idea we had at the stockton league is to create starter decks for new players. Checkmate/VU wouldnt be to hard to put together for 10 or 15 bucks i guess.

That's what I said a while ago. The time of MAV was so amazing because new players could just pick up a $10-$15 Avengers deck and it would be competitive and was easy to play. Same thing with Squad decks except they'd be different as far as playing them out goes.

The banned list is the reason people are willing to shell out big money for power cards, true.
Yugioh was a good game in the early stages. It was simple and fun because of all the different interactions. You could actually build a deck for $20 and win with it. That isn't the case now days. It happens in most cards games though. Just in other games the max you would have to spend on a deck would be 300-400. With Yugioh that isn't the case. You have to be wealthy or lucky to compete in that game now.
I don't see it hurting the game that much because people still pay for the cards. In the long run they may lose players but nothing is stopping UDE from printing these expensive cards as commons and balancing the playing field again. They have done it before and will do it again.
I feel Yu-Gi-Oh! has gotten out of hand. But we all need our games. Maybe the Yu-Gi players could "grow-up"(most who play here are 15-25) and play VS. but we can only hope.
