Yes you can. Remember the uniqueness rule checks for characters with the same name, not the same printed name. So Dr. Doom would actually be Dr. Doom/Spider-Man and the new Dr. Doom will be plain old Dr. Doom.

You are correct sir, since uniqueness checks number of names, so once you tack one on he's no longer the same guy, er that is as the guy who's not carrying the torch.

To be clear: uniqueness checks if two characters have the same name. To have the same name, they must share the exact same list of names. So, any card that gives/gains names without losing the old one(s) effectively becomes non-unique.
