I love the 200 point format. It is much harder to fit everything you want, which makes it feel gratifying when you come up with a nice and lean squad. I like the larger feel of a 300 point battle too (and the lessened emphasis on first strike is nice), but I'll always enjoy the minimalist feel of 200.
As we all know, Necropolis figures are generally not very good. However, the few good figures it does have are extremely powerful. So, I figured I might as well try tossing them all together and seeing how it works out.
Vyre - this is probably the coolest finesse piece I've ever seen. I didn't even know it existed back when the game was actually going on! I just found out about it recently (and I'm desperately trying to acquire one if anyone has a source...), and I just think he is the coolest thing. He is expensive enough to be the primary figure in your squad, but his playstyle is that of a sneaky supporter. Quickness has always been enamoring on attacking figures (like Amazon Queen), and his Limited Invisibility/ranged attack combination is extremely rare. He even has Venom for good measure, as sort of a parting gift to anyone who decides to Ram him.
Fell Reapers/Doomathiak - these are fairly self explanatory: tie up ranged figures from 14" away, abuse shakeoff for pseudo-ramming, dance around opposing attackers while beating up their support figs, put two of them base to base (front and back) on a big figure to threaten 4 damage, etc. Three of them seems like a lot, but your redundancy rewards you with some augmented tactics that you can only pull off with multiple 14" fliers. Point for point the ***Fell Reapers are a better buy than Doomathiak, but I wanted to use the extra 7 points to upgrade to the third Fell to Doomathiak rather than include an Imp. This way the army is exactly 200 (which is essential) while keeping the ability to move the entire squad in two turns. Quickness is so good.
Your healer has LI, your main ranged threat has LI, and you have three 14 inch mega-harassers. Basically, you create all kinds of problems for ranged squads, which lets you pick and choose when and where most of your engagements will happen. This allows for lots of priority in first strike, as well as the ability to bully their supporting figures before the main skirmishes start happening.
Had I known about Vyre while the game was going on, this would have basically been my dream team that I would have used every time I played. Fielding two interesting LE's in a competitive team just looks cool, not to mention it was very rare to see a winning team that was based entirely on Necropolis figures. Plus, Fell Reapers have always been the coolest looking piece in the game - so having three of them on the board looks amazing.
Thanks! I clicked order so hard my mouse almost exploded. It's weird, because I almost placed an order from that site last week but I couldn't find anything worth getting from them besides Podo. Not only was Vyre not in stock, it didn't even come up in their database as existing at all.
Oh I mean it didn't show up at all when I searched for him last week. He showed up right now just fine though, and yeah I ordered him. Thanks again for the link (and not ordering him yourself!)
