While we are getting the umpteenth version of Spider-Man and Wolverine, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut. In this edition of Unclixed, it's Modred the Mystic!
In 1975, a series debuted entitled Marvel Chillers. It was a short lived anthology horror series where the bulk of the seven issue run spotlighted Tigra. But not until after the first two issues, which focused on a new character called Modred the Mystic.
Modred was the young apprentice to Merlin and hungry for knowledge. Merlin had taught Modred almost everything about magic and mysticism there was to know... with the exception of one forbidden tome: The Darkhold. But Modred was so ambitious to learn everything he could that upon opening the Darkhold, he had to fight an evil spirit that put him in a coma. Merlin then sealed Modred in a hidden vault so he would reawaken when magic would be ready to return to the world.
So after two archaeologists found Modred in the 70’s, he was revived and still fighting the evil of The Darkhold. It seemed like he was bound to become a new mystic hero in the Marvel Universe, teaming with Thing in Marvel Two-In-One. But that didn’t last. He was soon corrupted by Chthon and became a villain. He fought The Avengers, Thing, Excalibur and Quasar.
Modred then shuffled over to become an anti-hero, joining the Darkhold Redeemers in the era of the Midnight Sons. But would then bop right back over to villainy again clashing with Doctor Strange and much later, Hank Pym’s Mighty Avengers. Most recently, Modred had appeared in the All-New All Different Squadron Supreme.
Why clix him? Mainly because with the proliferation of mystics in the Marvel Universe over the last few years, it would be nice to have more than just Doctor Strange. It’d also be a start to making the Darkhold Redeemers and more characters from that 90’s horror line.
Who would he play with? Pretty much mystics and the aforementioned Darkhold Redeemers.
What would his dial look like? Listen, if Modred the MYSTIC doesn’t have the MYSTICS TA, it would be insane. Aside from that, the powers of his dial probably wouldn’t look too different from other magically based characters: Energy Shields/Deflection, Psychic/Penetrating Blast, Perplex, Phasing/Teleport. Maybe a special power to represent his knowledge of the Darkhold that lets him use one of a couple different powers.
What would your dial for Modred look like, folks? Feel free to reply as that's it for this edition of Unclixed! Be here next week for an all new Comic Accurate! In two weeks, Unclixed will be back with someone else!
oh man I LOVE this guy. he's a super obscure character but because of his inclusion in the marvel supers rpg, he became an unexpected add-on in the campaign I GMed, joining my buddy's team so I have fond non-canonical memories of this guy. mists of morpheus ftw!
I would love to see him clixed, especially as part of a midnight sons set as a successor to the mystics and monsters we got in asm. it's been too long and that thing went over like gangbusters, so bring 'em on!
I know him best from assisting Spider-Woman in her early adventures and when the Maximoff twins returned to Wundagore Mountain to explore their origin (the story of a lone pregnant woman seeking refuge and Bova, the cow-woman, delivering the twins).
I'd love to see him clixed for sure! Such a busy costume too. It! Has! Everything!

Wow, i haven't seen this character in years...i remember he showed up in Marvel Two In One pretty often. Would be nice addition to clix, maybe a wild card and a mystic
Because he isn't Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Capt. Marvel (Danvers), Loki, Thanos, or any of the other way-too-frequently seen members of the MCU.
Those are reason enough for me.
That I like the character at all is something I consider purely a bonus at this point.
Given how often he has "gone to the darkside" I would suggest anyone with the mystics TA or KW could mind control him much the same way past iterations of Valkyrie, or the Superman Prime from WF allowed it.
As for his 1,500 year hibernation from Camelot how about giving him a stop click where he cannot be targeted (or be given any actions) for 2 or 3 turns? After that stop click his stats would ramp up reflecting his abilities upon awakening in the modern world.
I seem to recall in those Marvel Chillers issues that he used mystic energy blasts that seemed to function very similar to Force Blast (AND yes I did buy both those and read them). Pulse Wave and possibly poison would also be a good fit.
Now that I think about it how about he gets a trait where he takes one unavoidable click everytime he KO's someone to reflect his gradual descent into madness and being controlled by evil forces the more he used his magic? Or perhaps everyone around him, friend and foe alike, gets hit by a Pulse wave he generates everytime he takes dmg from an attack. This would be in addition to mystics dmg, so players would have to plan carefully when engaging him.
Perplex, PC or Outwit would be necessary with low dmg and attack values so he can't be completely ignored, and only really does significant dmg when he is hit by an attack.
Side step and IM elevation with flavor text using levitation but no flight symbol since off the top of my head I'm going to say genuine flight wasn't one of his gifts.
My random thoughts.
Edit:: The reactionary pulse wave should be limited to 1 dmg per figure single target or not. He should only have a range of 5-6 at most so opponents have a chance to shoot him and avoid the resulting pulsewave. And definitely make him a unique silver ring fig to avoid abuse.
50-60 points with 1 or 2 stop clicks and a moderate dial of 5 or 6 total clicks of life with ESD prior to the stop click and toughness after with impervious on the final (stop?) click on his dial. I'd say perplex/outwit on the top half of his dial and PC after the stop click reflecting his growing mystic might as he goes to the darkside.
If the stop click option is used he would be particularly hard to score with one or two delays where he's untargetable, so a bump in points might be warranted.
