I recently learned of the Heroclix Mod on TTS (Tabletop Simulator) available on Steam. I've gotten a chance to play with it a little, and I think it works great. Scripted tokens help keep track of perplexes, Outwits, and other modifiers. Action tokens work smoothly too. The vast majority of carded sets are already at your fingertips, and you can import any figure you want using the Unit section's character ID from right here on HCRealms.
I got into it to preview the JLU set because: Corona.... But once I checked out Tabletop Simulator, I saw that it was SO much more. The game at full price will cost you $20. (when Steam has a sale, it can get even cheaper) and the vast community of Board game enthusiasts has expertly recreated every board game you've ever played, every game you've ever heard of, and many you haven't. $20, and you get every board game ever, for like, as long as Steam is on the internet. All the fan-made mods are free. Every card from the new MTG Ikoria set was available to play drafts, or just build decks with before the set was even in stores. Same goes for JLU.
So I'm here to say that I like the option, and to endorse it, but also to find out who else plays, and to try and arrange some games.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much the scripted tokens add to the game and streamline play once you get into it. being able to look at all elements by mousing over them is great too. For the most part, its just like playing in the real world though,
I've played a couple times 2-3 times with friends and once with my nephew.
I'd still rather play in person with real figures in hand; but it filled the void when we couldn't get together during quarantine.
It is a little weird that both players have every figure. In that situation, we were putting Peggy Carter ultra-chases on the sideline, or all the Trouble Alert chases. It kind of seemed less special since we all had every figure.
Also, there is the issue that Steam is selling a game that doesn't belong to them at $20 which includes everything ever, when WizKids is investing a lot of money creating that game to earn a profit. As enjoyable as it may be to play, Steam is brining in money on a product that doesn't belong to them. If you're playing on Steam I hope you are still supporting your local gaming store as well.

My memory is a little fuzzy but I don't think the Heroclix module was a DLC but a user created module so the game developers and Steam are not directly profiting from the Clix content. As the module creator is using Heroclix figure images and titled it with the name, if it picks up in popularity it will draw the attention of WizKids.
correct. nobody makes money off the mods. It's kind of like being sad that Photoshop exists because you could scan in a picture of the Mona Lisa. The community is huge, and they have put in a lot of work for free, not just on clix.... but every game ever. In response, Lords of Waterdeep has been released as a digital board game by the manufacturer. The pressure of TTS has made that happen, and the official product is much more robust and slick, scripted at every level. But you can still play the board game as originally offered, in a digital room. I love that game. And guess what ? I own that too. It hasn't hurt the industry as far as I can tell.
I do still collect. In fact I've been continuing to collect these past two and a half years where I have had no chances to play. So yes, I paid $20 for TTS, but I have also paid hundreds into Wizkids and local stores. I've bought around three cases and a starter during that time. I don't think any money is being lost, LOL. If anything, the one game I finally got to play made me feel so much better about those expenses. Clix is a unique animal in gaming. Most games you can just wait and get it later, but with clix I feel like I want to get the expansions I'm interested in while they are available, before it becomes a problem or too expensive to hunt them down.
also, if you want a less "top-meta only" type game, just agree to play figures you actually own... or play a JLU draft! ...or play pauper.
When it gets down to it too... TTS exists with a massive community. all the board game mods are made and they are amazing. YOU deciding to not play won't stop it. ALL Heroclix players wouldn't Stop it if they boycotted.

well, if you played me, and we only played figures we own, I'd still be able to play all the ultra chases, Prime Storm, and plenty of other hard to get figs.... because I've been collecting.... but you know, I don't have a problem with players trying out figures they don't have. Might help them decide if they want to invest in the actual figure, or let them get a chance to try the figure even though they can't afford to pay the high prices.
ultimately, it's all up to you how and what you play. You don't HAVE to play all the $100+ figures all the time.
I got a copy of TTS and the mod. I also do support my LCS/LGS with clix purchases. I'm down to play a game probably on a Sunday.
They say the best weapon is one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once. That's how Dad did it, that's how America does it, and it's worked out pretty well so far." Robert Downey/Tony Stark
Well, between myself and 2 of my friends we spent $60 on Tablet Top Simulator specifically to ay Heroclix. None of the 3 of us have ever used it for anything else. We definitely played figures we didn't own. That's $60 we could have spent on WizKids product. TTS/Steam definitely made money on something that belongs to WizKids.
I can argue that I still support local game stores and WizKids, but I still paid money for a knock-off product.

just now heading into my new job to fill out paperwork. Not sure when I'll be available, but I'd love to play some games. let's give it a shot when schedules become clear!
