OverPower is back! Lazarus Rising Games has revived OverPower with an array of characters and licenses to bring the classic CCg into the modern era!
For those who don't know... OverPower is a card game where each player builds a deck around four characters. From there you battle to complete your mission, thwart your opponent's mission, or defeat your opponent's team. Its unique mechanics distinguish it from other CCGs
For those who do remember OverPower, LRG has been doing actual playtesting for a long time to streamline the rules and update the game. The basics you remember are still there, but with these updates you won't need a compendium of rulings for each card type. They've learned from watching the old game for so long, and through thorough testing they've worked to make every character playable.
The first set, releasing through Kickstarter, spotlights classic characters like Zeus, Cthulhu, and Zorro alongside Edgar Rice Burroughs characters like Tarzan and John Carter. Their next license will be Top Cow. After that... well, the third license hasn't been publicly announced yet, but if the leaks are true it's a major superhero brand with a modern media presence.
LRG is working to make the game affordable as well. A booster's Commons are two "character stacks," each stack consisting of one character and five of their Special cards. No getting a character in one pack then chasing all over for Specials to make them playable! They've also committed that every playable card is available as a Common or Uncommon. Rares and Ultra Rares are reserved for art variants and foils. They've also taken the most basic cards out of boosters and put them in a "Power Station," further reducing the barrier to entry.
LRG also plans robust support for player events, both at conventions and in stores. They're setting up an Ambassador program to draw organizers, and offering prizes for supported events.
LRG pitches Overpower as a "second game," not expecting to dislodge Magic or the other major CCGs. But I see it as a strong second game for Clix players as well.
I wish I'd thought to post here sooner... the Kickstarter is ending in just a couple days. But check out the links below for more information!
