Well, new equipment rules are out and my local gamers are arguing the fine print on them.
First:
Equipments are part of the force now.

During force construction, equipment is added to your starting force by paying its point

Fair enough, my gut tells me that now every equipment is Unique, since all of them have the gear symbol.

picked up and held), but don’t normally start on the map and have their own specific rules. They
are items assigned to your characters during force construction that allow your characters to gain
extra abilities. They may also be equipped during the game under special circumstances.

Objects with special effects are special objects, and their effects are described on their card.
Special Objects can be either light or heavy and have the following rules:
They are marked with a gear symbol .
They have a point value of 1 or more.
They are all Unique even though they don’t have a silver ring.
Since there are no other options to include Equipments on your force, even figures like D+ Scarlet Witch chase have to fall in line and can't have duplicates of the same equipment on your force, right?
Now, what happens with Mad Jim Jaspers?
He has this trait:

Replace their equipped equipment with another equipment of equal or less points from your Sideline. // POWER: Once per game choose a friendly unequipped character within range and line of fire and choose an equipment from your Sideline. Since he adds Equipment to the sideline by his own effect, this equipment is free of the Unique rule? can you add a duplicate Equipment via The Crooked Market?

I can’t get the new rules to load on my phone so I can’t quote the effect, but from reading them earlier on my computer and clarifications I’ve read, characters with start the game traits still have their equipment come from outside the game, so you could still get multiples of the same equipment through those effects.
Some characters have traits that let them start the game with equipment. When using these characters, you must indicate if you will be using their trait that grants them equipment or if you will be assigning them equipment.
If you choose to use their trait that lets start the game with equipment, you may not assign them equipment during force construction (they still gain the equipment they start the game with that comes from outside the game).
If you choose to assign them equipment during force construction, then you may not use the part of the trait that allows them to start the game with equipment (they may still use any other effects the trait may grant).
Characters with start the game with equipment traits don’t use the rules for assigning them as part of your force.

Edit: Finally got the Rulebook on my phone:
Characters with start the game with equipment traits don’t use the rules for assigning them as part of your force.
Just for clarification, it isn't so much they don't use the assigning rules as much as you can choose to either use their own trait for equipping the given equipment or you can choose to use the start the game equipped like any other character can do.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
