Originally posted by BrotherMagneto It was a mistake, and in retrospect, we wouldn't have done it. Our figures are made on large molds, with several figures to the mold. We wanted the other figures on that mold, and didn't have the time to re-cast the mold.
I don't believe for a second that Wizkids (or the current design staff) did not want to keep the Con Artist in the game.
Rocket Ranger I am in complete agreement with you. I have seen this coming since WK announced retirement and witnessing these TWO set retirements feels as a slap in the face to me. The game has definetely lost some of its lustre for me, and alot of my fellow players at local venues. And I am a guy like you that plays this game for FUN. Sure I win LEs from week to week, mostly because I am able to play in at least 3 tourneys that week if I really want the prize. I dislike retirement plain and simple. I have yet to hear one GOOD reason for the retirement of figures. This whole issue is just frustratingly stupid to me.
Chuck Norris is the only person who can simultaneously hold and fire FIVE Uzis: One in each hand, one in each foot, and the 5th one he roundhouse-kicks into the air, so that it sprays bullets.
I don't have a problem with playing in or judging "limited figure choice" games (eg select all your team from a given Universe / Faction / release / colour of base / Judges preferance etc etc), and deal with "retirement" like that - a particular tourney may not allow certain figs (eg this years UK Nationals ran with the ubiquitous "banned" list...).
No prob.
However, the basic "concept" of retirement is flawed.
I wholeheartedly support releasing as many new figures, cards, pogs, enhanced game mechanics etc as possible, and if these can fix percieved glitches in the game, well, fine...
but the "core" game should allow ALL figures ever released for the game - the "constrained" figure-set tournies should be the variant.

No Dupes Except Generics !
...and no Retirement. Ever.
Originally posted by webhead817 I agree with these sentiments. Unrestricted events allow wide open team building and theme play from across all of the sets, restricted events will lend themselves more to mechanically powerful teams that mostly disregard theme in favor of function.
I agree and all would be nice and well _if_ unrestricted events had the same level of support as restricted events. With only one unrestricted event per month, usually with older LEs as prizes, this is just not the same like trying to compete for the current LEs. I know from our gaming group that naturally the biggest interest is in the new LEs and so the Judge is basically forced to schedule mostly restricted events to make sure the nice new LEs are distributed among the group. I'm glad to see that with December WK changed their policy and that their will be MuMay LEs for the unrestricted events and i hope the policy will stay like this, because i'm sure the general uproar about retirement were much less, if there were more possibilities to use the retired figures in tournaments.
Again, fair point, but this is up to your local Judge, as they define the tourney environment, and should let all players know in advance what this is...
yeah, yeah.. First they retire Kang, then Dr. Strange, and finally Constrictor. Now they've retired vet White Queen (along with her two inferior versions), AIM Agents, and Mojo. They're really starting to tick me off....
How's it going, DaLuvster89?

I guess I'm not sure what all of the comotion is about.
For starters, characters have been poorly represented from the very beginning. In fact, I was irate that when DC came out, they had extra powers, but when I heard NC would have HSS, I was okay, expecting to see all of the new powers introduced to Marvel. But then CT came out, and still no Impervious or CCE. And not until two MORE Marvel sets did we see either of those powers introduced. I couldn't have been more elated when Ultimates Hulk came out, and I felt Hulk was finally given justice, even if it wasn't represented by the Hulk I was familiar with.
I've seen E and V Thing, E She-Hulk, R Inv Girl and rarely E or V, and V Human Torch, but never Mr. Fantastic. So seeing them retired doesn't bother me, since it would mean no more R IG turtles (if my judge even enforces it). In other words, they needed remakes anyway.
I'll cut to the chase, here. If you want to win an LE, why would you even care what characters you played? Why bring a FF theme team if the build doesn't call for it? Play R Black Panther and R IG and 5 Con Artists and the cheapest Support you can find, win the LE, then go play FF at home with friends. Tourneys have strict rules, friendly play can be different. Given, some of us don't get to play friendly games often, and tourneys are the best place to find fellow clixers.
But life isn't fair. If you play clix because you want to get away from the real world, and then find that your clix world isn't fair or ideal, either, then I'm not sure if anyone can tell you anything you'd be willing to hear and accept. HeroClix is a money-making enterprise for a few, a "choose-your-own-adventure-with-super-heroes" for some, and a strategy game with rules to be bent and powers to be exploited for still others. A tourney will likely contain some of each, and there is no avoiding that. So if you are one of the "this should be like the comics" people, you most likely aren't going to have as much fun playing as when you are playing with the same kind of players.
On a final note, I'm pretty pleased with Ultimates, and I think most people were as well. I'm disappointed with what Universe is and what it could have been. And I'm upset that when I can finally make a New FF army, they decide to retire Mr. Fixit. But I wouldn't have payed $3 to field a New FF army anyway; I'd play it in a friendly match when the LE isn't at stake. I wish DC and Marvel figs were segregated in tourneys, mostly because of unbalance issues, but I can't beat it, so I join it.
Alpha Flight gets Avengers. Deal with it. If they finally came out with an Alpha Flight TA, you'd just keep complaining that they hadn't done it sooner.
CT and XP are retired, and there's no way you're ever going to have EVERY figure you want contained in a base set with 3 expansions. Its just not going to happen.
WK is made more of people who want to make money, and less of people who want to meet the die-hard fans' wishes. It sucks, but if you came out with a better game, than I can almost garauntee you that once the money started coming in, your perspective would change as well.
