I was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion for using Battlefield Condition cards in friendly games?
A problem with BFC in friendly games is that one player could just play "ordinary day" everytime to negate any hope of ever seeing a BFC.
The "hand" concept balances out the "ordinary day" with other BFC's. However, you can't always play 3 or more games to make the hand concept work.
I guess, I'm looking for a home rule that would balance out "ordinary day" with other BFC's, in a one-game match-up.
Here is one possible idea:
Perhaps charge 10% of the build total for any BFC chosen by either team. In this case, a 300pt match-up between two friends would cost either team 30pts if they want a BFC. By having a percent cost, the BFC increases as it's impact increases (effecting more figures/powerful figures).
Another effect is that a player who wishes to enforce an "ordinary day" pays from his build total. Choosing ordinary day could cost you if the other player choses not to use a BFC at all. Perhaps, both players will pass on BFC's. Perhaps one player will pass and take his chances against the opposing teams BFC. And perhaps both will play BFC (with one or more of them being an ordinary day).
I think that this rule could provide a good mix of possibilities and, simulate the tournament "hand" effect in a one game match.
1) Both players are allowed to play up to two BFC, no duplicates. Not the best solution, but atleast one of your BFCs should survive.
2) House Rule, Ordinary Day only works on a 4,5, or 6. So...you CAN play OD, but there's a chance it won't work, then your opponent has a huge advantage...or, you can build your team around your own BCF, and gain an advantage back over our opponent, garunteed not to fail.
3) Outlaw Ordinary Day when playing with BFCs in frieendly play. Seriously, why would someone agree to use them, then just play ordinary day?
One thing I like about BFC, is that the will impare many "cheesey" teams. And, they will tend to reduce many of the standard crutches like Paramedics and ConArtists. So, I like BFC's but I want to balance them out for single friendly matches.
Anyhow, interesting ideas. Lets see....
1. Wow, a possibility of 4 non-ordinary day BFC's, OUCH!
Perhaps more likely each will have 1 ordinary day and negate whichever BFC hurts them the most. This will ensure that a team heavy or dependent on one concept is protected (ie flyers, outwitters, Con Artists etc.) This would also prevent one of the things I like about BFC's.
It would also increase the likelyhood of having 2 BFC in play (good or bad?). I do like to have decent chances of having no BFC's in play or having just one in play. Which could not happen.
2. Nice idea. Simple and meets my goals. Could produce 0 BFC's, 1 BFC or 2 BFC's.
3. As far as outlawing "ordinary day", it would force the game to always have 2 BFC's in play. Again, I like to have the chance of having 0, 1 or 2 active (non-ordinary day) BFC's in play.
That's what I'd do. If I were to use BFC's in a friendly game, I'd just shuffle all the cards I had, and then use the top one. I think in most cases, it makes sense for only one to be in play, rather than two, and this way it creates an element of surprise.
Random would be maybe the most fun in friendly games. They act almost like scenarios that way.
Another option might be this, institute a rule "If your BFC is cancelled by your opponent, you may instead choose both the map and map edge you wish to play on." *shrugs*
