Batman walked up to Super Volt and began to pull away his mask. He knew what he'd find, yet the realization that he was right still managed to shock him to his core.

“You’re dead,” Batman said. “Geo-Force saw you… he said you all died*.”

“He was wrong,” Jefferson Pierce replied.

“Freeze Batman!” Came a call from behind them. “They come with us.”

Batman and his allies turned to find themselves facing down Checkmate. Batman, upset over the capture and brainwashing of his former team, was preparing to make a move before Spoiler reached out and grabbed his hand. He looked down at her, angry at first, but then regained his composure and called for his team’s withdrawal.

When they had gotten several blocks away, he addressed his team. “Robin-- get together strike force C. Spoiler, come with me,” Batman said. Robin took a last look at Spoiler before swinging away. As the Batmobile rolled into view, the bubble windshield opened up like the cockpit of a fighter jet and Batman jumped into the driver’s seat. Spoiler just stood nearby, nervously shifting her weight from one foot to the other and both wanting to say something and scared of saying anything. Shortly, his stare broke her uncertainty and she clambered inside.

The two of them drove in silence. Stephanie wondered how out-of-line what she had done was, and wondered what Batman was going to do with her. She nearly jumped when Batman spoke.

“When you first started wearing the mask, I thought it was for one of two reasons. Either you were being used by your father to get to me, or you were rebelling against him like an angry child.”

Spoiler just gulped as he continued.

“But I may have been wrong,” he said slowly, as if unsure of how much he wanted to say. “You care about the job. Perhaps, because you‘ve grown up with a father who has no regard for the law. Perhaps it was watching what that did to your mother.”

Stephanie again felt like she was supposed to say something, but forced herself to keep quiet and see what he was going to tell her.

“With your training and quick thinking, you‘ve become an… asset in the field. You have earned the right to enter the fold in truth. No more sneaking around, no more unauthorized actions - and no more secrets.” Batman said as the Batmobile ran across a back road that led to Wayne Manor.

“What’s-- where are we?”

“If you swear yourself to me, and to my mission, then it’s past time you came into the family.”

Spoiler was terrified and amazed. What could possibly happen next?
