Firstly, welcome to Heroclix and the HCRealms community. Hope you enjoy it here and have a good time participating in all the discussion.
Since you don't really have specific requests, I recommend you frequent the "Heroclix General Discussion", "Rules of Combat", "Strategy/Tactics", "Combat Formations: Rate and Review", "Other News & Articles", and "Original Content" forums and read the HCR FAQ (link). That should give you a solid grip on what's going on in Heroclix and how to maximize your time here. (Man, I feel I should throw in a "get a paid subscription" reference in there! )
Anyway, try to purchase as much Heroclix as you can and attend a close hobbies/gaming shop. Get to Heroclix events, talk to judges and other players, see if the store or players will sell/give away Heroclix "singles", etc.
The best way to learn the game is to immerse yourself in it and learn the rules and strategies by playing. "Learn by doing" was how I learned Heroclix, and I find it to be better than theoretically planning strategies.
If you have any questions, ask me or anyone here, most people here are pretty nice and will answer "newbie" questions quite easily.
So, in conclusion, welcome to Heroclix and its premier community (so they say; see the banner! ) HCRealms. It will melt your face off.
In terms of team building, there is one way to do it. Just experiment. "Learn by doing", as I said earlier in quote.
The easiest way to gain an advantage on your opponent is with Battlefield Conditions. A well played BFC can totally negate one or more of your opponents main mechanics. At the very least it can hinder on of their mechanics which will cause them to adjust their play stragety. This can give you a tempo advantage, placement advantage, or just a plain mental advantage.
The key is to be able to quickly identify the mechanics of your opponents team, and to be able to build teams that are not easily affected by BFCs. easier said than done, even for experienced palyers.
Another way is with usage and placement of the new special objects from Collateral Damage or Sinister. Using them gives you more options than a simple light or heavy object. Also certain ones can hinder mechanics on an opponents team. At the very least it is a tempo advantage when they spend actions destroying them.
Most of the cardboard is inexpensive to purchase online. One dollar is the average price, with the more powerful ones like Disbanded going for up to $3.
Of course, you can always go the Trick Shotted Firelord / Protected Black Adam route!

The number one thing you can do to render your opponent's team useless, regardless of what you are facing is to roll high.
I don't care what you have and what you are playing against - always, always, ALWAYS roll high.
Its the closest you'll get to a sure thing in this game...
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
beat-down eh.
Well my advice is to have many figures with high damages and shoot to kill.
If you attack a character successfully in one turn make sure in that same turn to ko it with other figs on your team. It isn't the most offensive strategy but it will rack up the points.
Moloids spell DEATH!! Actually, you could probably play enough moloids to spell out death on a map, but what I mean is using small pt figs and pogs to "use up" your opponents actions.
Controlling actions is one of the keys to this game. That is why Incap as a power is so expensive on the dial.
Great Incap people are people with a range greater then 6 or 6 with RS and 2 targets (but make sure they are affordable).
Nightwing is a great Incapper
Vertigo is a great Incapper
Kid Quantum, not so much as she costs too much for what she does.
Every relationship is fundamentally a power struggle, and the individual in power is whoever likes the other person less.

The best way to move towards 'beatdown' is to have high-movement that can get ground-pounders into base-to-base contact, while preventing yourself from being sniped to death.
The new maps make it much easier to maneuver towards an opponent, so lets forget trying to "double-time" Lockjaw or anything similar.
The best thing to start with is some fliers with running shot. These guys will also serve as taxis for your GROPOS. Try to get a ranged attack from your taxis, and possibly one or two from their fares as you advance on the enemy.
As many Ult Sabretooths that you can find. Preferably Exp with two Vets. Drop. Crads to look for: Auto Regen, ICWO, Armor Peircing, Vendetta. Sabre has the Flurry/BCF combo going, so you'll essentially(theoretically) be getting double the attacks and chances to deal big damage. I prefer him over his Wolverine counter-part due to his cheaper point cost. He's also fairly easy to come by.
Watch out for Crosswinds, Poor Teamwork, Disbanded, Energy Explosion & Pulswave(NovaBlast).
You could also use Logan from Clobberin Time, but he seems to be harder to come by.

that works really well, anybody with good damage, and can stay alive, is what you need... send them in, and (if they can stay alive) you wont have to worry about them doing little damage to you, then just weaken your opponents main guys or their perplexer/prob. controler/outwitter/medic (whichever works for you) once you soften up your opponent for a little, you should be able to bring in your other figs and clean up.
good figs for this are:
Iron fist (great attack, gets regen)
Executioner (MOE, phasing, toughness, later BCF and WP = perfect)
Sabertooth (like crannberry said)
