I played a tourny yesterday and was annoyed that I couldn't grab an object I was next to. So I was wondering, If I am engaged in battle already do I have to break away in order to grab the object or can I just place an action token on my character to grab the object.
Pretty sure you have to pick it up during movement. If you fail the breakaway, you can't move and therefore can't pick up the object.
You are correct, sir.
"Come on Hulk! Where's the old boasting? The battle cries? Why aren't you bellowing about how you're 'the strongest one there is'? Could it be because... you know it's not true?"
"No. Because it's just too obvious."
-Juggernaut to Hulk
The reason is, if you want to be specific, because of the wording of the Super Strength power:
"When you give this character a move or power action, during this action, if this character moves, it may pick up an object in this character's square or an adjacent square and carry it."
(From the PAC, bold added for emphasis)
Bottom line is that the character must actually be moving (even if its zero squares) in order to pick up the object.
Okay thanx. So let me ask you this as an add on: Say puck is next to a character and an object. He tries to break away and fails to do so. Since he is an avenger and moves for free does that now mean this action was counted for your total of actions now?
These free movers move for free and even though they missed the breakaway roll usually they don't count this as an action since it was a free move. So I ask how come they cannot pick up the object next to them even if they miss they're break away roll. Really I am NOT trying to be difficult!

Depends.
IF you declare you are using a Move Action to breakaway, then yes.
IF you declare you are going to make a Power Action to Charge after you breakaway, then no since Avengers non-allotment action is ONLY used during MOVE Actions. This is especially important when moving Vision who has the Avengers TA and Phasing.
IF he uses Phasing, it costs you an action from your allotment. IF he doesn't use Phasing, it doesn't.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
That is where the confusion for me is. If you can declare a move action and still fail to breakaway AND not have it count against your turns. What stops you from picking up that object that is next to the character if they declare a move action to break away?

Because you HAVE to actually move.
If you fail breakaway 2 things you need to consider:
A) Your Action IMMEDIATELY ends. You can only pick up an object DURING your action and a failed breakaway ends the action making it impossible to pick up the object.
B) A failed breakaway prevents you from moving. It doesn't say "attempts to move", the power says "IF THIS CHARACTER MOVES". Since you didn't go anywhere (as a result of your action) you can't pick up the object.
Hope that helps.

That's why. If you fail to break away, your action never takes place, but you still take a token.
I don't understand how the free-moving Avengers thing could possibly come into play.
Not being an arse pain, here, but have you read the Danger Room rules? I know that I played the game for at least a year before I actually read a rulebook. Once I did, most of the aspects that I once considered confusing were cleared up. I was confused because I didn't actually know the rules!

Here's how...
300 point game, and you've made two non-free action so far...we'll say Aquaman did a cc ation and Ice put a Barrier. Hawkman has Charge and is adjacent to ICONS Joker. If Hawkman attempts to breakaway/Charge (power action), that uses the team's third action allotment, so (for example) starter E Batman will not be able to do a cc action on Lockjaw. If Hawkman elects to do a move action to breakaway, then fail or succeed his action will not count against the three allotment.
The power action Charge or move action must be decided before the breakaway roll is made.
