You have picked a doozy for a first post question. After all, there are many, many figures you can base a good 300 point team around. However, I shall try to be helpful and whatnot, so here goes;
Batman (E or R) - Stealthed outwit and willpower make this guy a strong team leader. He's mobile, hits fairly hard, and is masterful support piece.
Nightwing (V) - Very similar to Batman. As a matter of fact there is much debate about which is better. I feel it is mostly a style issue, so test them out and see which you prefer.
Joker (V) - A solid batman Enemy force can be killer, and what is said force without Joker? Team him up with Catwoman, Bane, Manbat, and Harley plus some Criminals and watch the fun of a multiple outwit/perplex force that keeps having Bane gut any threat.
Bane (V) - Still good even without Joker, just pair him with a taxi and you have a threat everyone will fear, then team him with others to make it even worse.
Braniac - A skill piece. I have heard him insulted and I have heard him praised. I've played him for both results. Team him with some other flyers and some Intergang and outwit and blast everything to death.
Other figures to consider, that aren't team centers but are major support pieces are;
Hawk and Dove - solid brawlers.
Solomon Grundy - Cheap and strong, hard to kill.
Gorilla Grod - Check out the Rookie, you may be surprised.
Flash (E) - Starting click identical to Veteran, and cheaper.
Booster Gold - Excellent taxi who can fight as well.
Huntress - Surprisingly effective sniper
Robin - For some reason he always seems to be a "lucky" piece.
Aquaman - Cheap leadership, good attack and damage.
Swamp Thing - Affordable powerhouse with a ton of clicks.
Hope some of this gets you headed in a good direction. But the best teacher is experience, as your play style may differ vastly from mine or others. Go out and play some games, discover if you prefer brawling or snipers. Find out if you like to have medics or no. Also, find out which figures are just darn fun for you to play (for me it's Joker/Harley and Flash in DC) Who knows, you may even find a new centerpiece figure that few people have figured out how to use. If you do then post and let us know as you boast about how Weather Wizard lays out anything...well, maybe you won't post *that*.
That was probably a misspelling for OWAW Superman. The OWAW is an acronym for Our World at War. Which, for this figure, is actually incorrect cause the Superman that wore the black S was in actually in a comic book titled Kindom Come, and not OWAW. The Superman in Our World at War wore the classic red, yellow, and blue suit that we all know and love him in.
Two corrections, Higher_Level:
First, it's Our WorldS At War, because it was a three-world battle between Earth, WarWorld and Apokolips.
Second, after Kansas got wiped off the face of the earth, a much depressed Superman took up the Black S as a sign of mourning. His enhanced powers are a result of A: Pushing himself to his limits, B: getting wrapped up in what was left of his "electric blue" look, and C: Plunging directly into the Sun until he became supremely powerfull and took out Imperiex.
What, you mean you didn't buy all 40ish tied in books? I'm shocked.
We need Sand. And Sandman. And even Sandy the Golden Boy.
