The title says it all. Couldn't find the answer to this after a search. I suspect it can since Thwart is not the same thing as Outwit, but not sure.

Check the E&C documents. Power Cosmic and Quintessence Team Abilities cannot be countered.

Seriously, for its cost, I don't think PC TA should even be nerfed by Disbanded. Most PC TA 'members' aren't even affiliated, usually acting independently.

Oops silly me. You are correct. Let me re-phrase the question then:

Can the Power Cosmic TA be dissented?

I know that, but feats take precendence over the standard rules. So theoretically the Dissent feat could counter the Power Cosmic TA, thus allowing Power Cosmic characters to be outwitted.

Feats take precedence over the standard rules, but the E&C (Errata and Clarifications) documents take precedence over feats. So the definitive answer is no, you cannot counter the Power Cosmic TA with Dissent.

I asked this same question when Origin came out, and got smacked down by my local judges. It hurt, but I learned. rep to you for being curious!

Dissent states quite specifically that it allows you to outwit (cancels) a TA as if it were a power

Power Cosmic characters may not have powers cancelled by Outwit

Ergo, PC may not be dissented

Thwart, on the other hand, does not say anything, anywhere about feats being outwitted. They aren't. They are thwarted.

It's like in Magic: The Gathering when you're trying to figure out if something affects a particular creature. I don't know how many times I've asked, "Ok. Does it use the word 'target?' No? OK. Then the creature's DEAD." It's the same here. The Errata have been updated to say, straight up, that the Power Cosmic and Quintessence cannot be "countered." As the card for Dissent says "use Outwit to 'counter,'" then, no, it doesn't work.

Which is probably why the previous threads didn't show up when WakandaMan searched for them. We've had a few "Can Dissent cancel Power Cosmic/Quintessence?" questions but nothing about Thwart affecting PC/Quintessence (for obvous reasons!).

Is there a reason why we couldn't get a copy of the E&C and FAQs written as stickies in this forum? It would be pretty easy to keep them up-to-date by editing the posts whenever a new PDF was released.

that would be great... since most people look in the realms before the wizkids site it would be a great resource and curb the rate that duplicate threads pop up.

It's not really that the E&C is taking precedent over a ruling, more like the E&C document is clarifying it. The term "counter" has been in the game for a while. Before, the only thing that can "counter" was Outwit, and now, Dissent. Since back when Earthbound was introduced, it has always had the text, "this ability may not be countered." They just added the text to PC/Q.
