The barrier ability has some excellent applications in 200+ point games.
There's no better way to aggravate your opponent by forcing them to move into a position they don't want to be in or making them sit still while you do whatever you want.
With 2 barrier figures, you can alternate using the barrier ability as a means to consistently keep your pieces protected from range attacks while not having to push your barrier guys out of their ability.
My fun barrier team:
E. Dr. strange
V. Blizzard
R. Avalanche
Mojo
V. Whirlwind
R. Hydra Medic
For a mixed tourney, lots of barrier here, the good Doctor gets it if pushed, mojo can MC into the dr's range, and blizzard is there to Pulse wave an imperverious figure if needed. THe Whirlwind is a good cleanup crew to whatever is shot. Its a lot of fun

No it's blocking terrain, but if you let him do his thing first, then put barrier up, he will be protected until it drops at beginning of your next turn, etc.
