I understand how Mercenary works...even with multiple Team Abilities and the costs and how it can fluctuate from game to game....
What I wish to know is this:
Lets say I have a Sinister Syndicate piece....and....
I have 2 Avengers Thunderbolted to Sinister Syndicate....so...
Does my Mercenary cost 20 points or 10 points?
The Thunderbolted pieces have the Team Ability which is the requirement of Mercenary....or is the timing issue a preventive here???..which do you announce first?
A follow up question.
Lets say the Sin Syn piece is half price of the Merc....still permits him to CHOOSE the TA, just not use it....BUT if one of the Thunderbolted pieces to SinSyn is higher than the merc...it can still be used in game when conditions are met...correct??
Thunderbolts can't count because you must determine your build total (of which Mercenary is a part of) before the game even gets to rolling for the map, much less before your declare what your T-bolted TA is.
I heard that you could change who u merc to from round to round.
lets say you have
1 Synister Synidicate
2 Avengers
3 Fantastic Four pieces
So you can choose to pay 20 and take all 3 at any time, 15 and take Avengers or Fantastic Four...or 10 and only Fantastic Four...
When do you announce who your merc is....before set up, after set up like Thunderbolts......etc???
wes
Well, you can't change your point value from round to round, if that is what you are asking. Just like you couldn't choose to drop a bystander between rounds 1 and 2 to give yourself a lower build (and perhaps an edge against an opponent who turtles), you can't flip flop the point value of this feat.
I suppose, if you had the correct number of different TAs (say 2 Avengers vs 2 X-men), you could theoretically change between those TAs each round... though, as Judge, I'd discourage that simply to avoid confusion.
What you probably heard, though (and it just may not have been explained clearly to you by some other party) is someone who is paying to Merc different TAs and they are talking about switching between those paid-for-TAs.
As far as announcing goes, per the feat description, you announce before the beginning of the game's first turn (and while it doesn't come out and specifically say 'during team building', since the TA you choose potentially changes the point value of the feat, it is pretty much understood to mean 'during team building'.).

Last spring I guess I misread these forums...sorry just rusty and getting back to tournament play.
Say I have 1 batman, 2 avengers, 3 FF and 3 SinSyn. I choose to pay 10 points for Merc.
As I understand it I could choose either FF or SinSyn for my merc EACH round.
IF I pay 20 points for Merc could I choose ANY of the 4 team abilities?

Correct.

No. If you choose to pay 20 points you can only choose a Team Ability that has precisely 1 member on your team - in your example the only option would be Batman Ally.
If you want to be able to choose between all TAs, you have to pay the full cost of Mercenary - 25 points. If you choose to pay the discount price, you are limiting your options.
Also, because normalview didn't cover it, Mercenary can't be used to give the figure an ATA, or the original TA (the one found on the PAC) for figures that are assigned an ATA. In contrast, a Mercenary can use an appropriate TA when adjacent to a higher point figure that is T-bolted to the selected TA.
Food for thought and all that...

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries....now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.
