...the special rules that came with the old 3D objects in the Outdoor/Indoor Adventure packs said the Soda Machine and Mail Box add +1 to damage dealt....
This isn't quite correct. The rules sheet that came with the Adventure Kits used the term "damage rating" for those objects, of course the bookcase and computer released in those sets affected the "attack rating", so those objects originally affected the damage value. I want to say that the errata to change this was made to keep the special effect of these objects inline with the general rules for objects, (and I'm also inclined to say the advent of the RoT, which didn't exist when those sets were released) but I can't search that far back (2002-2003) on the WK forums to be certain, but it was definately an errata.
Makes it more interesting that the PTB aren't inclined to rerrata them back I think.
BoT
I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries....now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

The ruling does make the Adventure kits more attractive - as the rulings stand, the Soda Machine has a slight advantage over the Com Dish as you can still Perplex up damage another notch and not break the rule of 3, as well as bypassing some things that trigger off damage value (like the Power Dampening Field BFC).
The Dumpster isn't what it used to be (you can just use the Generator from the Danger Room set instead), so the other objects need all the help they can get if the kits are to stay competitive.

I honestly can't say that's what the adventure pack rules read or not; I lost mine a looooooooong time ago. I am not doubting you at all, just saying that is out of my range.
However, the 3D rules document that combines the rules for both Indoor and Outdoor packs says damage dealt (and 'attack value' where necessary):
Mailbox – Increase the attacker’s damage dealt by 1.
Soda Machine – Increase the attacker’s damage dealt by 1.
That's what all the current rulings have been based on. I wouldn't call it an errata so much as a terminology shift. Nothing in this game uses the term 'rating' anymore (In fact, a quick perusal of the old IC rule book doesn't even turn up that term... which makes me suspect that whomever wrote the rules for the Adventure packs was not clear on his or her terminology.).
However it came about, though, for quite awhile now the Soda Machine and Mail Box have added a +1 to damage dealt. So we can still use it to get around the Rule of 3 and eek out a bit more damage with our favorite Super Strength guys.
The ruling does make the Adventure kits more attractive
I really don't think that's an issue. The Adventure Kits haven't been widely available for quite some time now, so how attractive those special objects are as competitive items isn't really a concern for WK.

I still find the dumpster attractive as an object. Since you can only play one of any special object at a time this allows you to equip two of your bricks with reusable heavy objects. (Dumpster & Generator).
Back to original topic. I hope that it is either ruled that you do not have to use an object that is being held as part of a quake attack or you would be able to at least use any special abilities of any object being held.

Rampaging Hulk Squash The Rampaging Hulk can use Leap/Climb. Immediately after the resolution of a move action in which the Rampaging Hulk uses Leap/Climb, he can use Quake as a free action.
As per the latest E&C, whenever Quake is used and the character is holding an object, the object is not used in the attack.
The only problem is I can't find the supporting text in the E&C that Norm is referring to. I could just be blind though.

Gorgon's special power (Transformed by the Mists) allows him to use Super Strength and Quake, but specifies that he isn't required to use the weapon when he uses Quake.
I assumed that this was a special bonus granted to Gorgon, but it may indeed be intended as a clarification of how Super Strength and Quake interact.
In the E&C at the top of page 1 it talks about replacing the text on page 37 so that objects are not used in close combat attacks that deal Zero or No damage (i.e. mind control) or affect multiple opponents (i.e. quake).

Worth noting is that Gorgon has both Quake and Super Strength through a special power, and his notes specifically that he doesn't have to use his object up when he Quakes (if I remember right).

Reason: I apparently wasn't the first to say this...

So I would assume that when you Quake a SINGLE opposing character you would ignore objects the Quaker carried.

The only difference between Gorgon and Hulk is that Gorgon gets Quake and Super Strength through the same power. Hulk has Super Strength and a power that grants him Quake. When using Quake since it targets more than one square or character, the object shouldn't be destroyed.
Though it would be pretty cool if you could use it in the attack. Make it like the comics where Hulk jumps in at Cyclops, Beast, and Iceman with a dumpster(or whatever) and hits Iceman so hard it causes a Quake to everyone else.
